Z-Cars and Harley's in WNC

http://www.zcar.com/forums/read/4/1931403

This weekend was Z-Car fest in WNC.
Here is what they had to say about the Harley crowd.

The car clubs have just about ruined that stretch of road.
In my opinion they are trying to take it over.
Yes, this past weekend it was the Z car club and the Porch car club up there to contend with.
The motorcycles do not scare me, but the cars do.
They have no fear of taking a curve wide to make it, not thinking of the bike coming from the opposite direction.
The speed limit is 35 and this is a free world. If someone wants to travel al 35 that is their business. If you are stuck behind them you just need to take it with a grain of salt and enjoy the scenery on that run, then smell the roses on the runs that you can make fast.
All people that cross that road are not interested in seeing how fast or good their car is and we need to respect that for them.
I have seen some serious arguments up there before between some car drivers and some bikers, it is coming to a head.

Guys,
Don't blame the z cars, porches or HD's for ruining the Dragon. We all did. The last three times I have been there it was crowded. One day was a weekday. Police are everywhere due the deaths and injuries that have occurred there. It is a real attraction and we made it so.

I got news for you. There are a bunch of roads in NC that are every bit as fun as the Dragon used to be and they do not have all the crowds to contend with. I'm glad I did it before it got so popular, but I do not plan on going back anytime soon.

Ultra:

Amen to what you said. The Gap is so crowded now and just too dangerous with all the different folks out there. I can go up and down a few roads in our area and get the same thrill without the risk. Of course, I can't get a tshirt or sticker or other shwag, but can still get a nice curvy ride in.

I escorted a bicycle ride for a couple of years called the "tour des gaps" and it involved four gaps that ran up to the BRP joined by some nice scenery and such. I still use those roads for my mountain rides when I need a fix.

I guess it just goes to show that a$$holes come in 4 wheel varieties, too. Having road raced (legally, open wheel on sanctioned road courses) I would love to see some of those "fast and furious" types take to a track with professional race drivers. Then they'd know how it feels to have someone 6" off your tail and flashing the beams to let you know you're S L O W. I'd also like to see them try to take a cruiser around some of those corners at speed. Did they ever stop to think that *they* were being the dangerous drivers on that road?
I've been stuck behind slow drivers as well. If they are obeying the speed limit, you can't fault them. Pick your spot, realize you are breaking the law by crossing the double yellow and exceeding the speed limit, and take your chances. Just be ready to deal with the possible consequences, and pray that those consequences don't include killing some innocent person coming the other way.
As far as getting out and starting a physical confrontation - man, they must be nuts. Being a few minutes late isn't worth getting killed over. You never know if that guy in the leathers is a poser, or a 1%, or just plain nuts.

Well, riv, I have a "Porch" but I don't take it to Deal's Gap. I won't even ride a motorcycle up there. Ten or fifteen years ago Deal's Gap was fun. Now it sucks. There are just too many car clubs and too many cruisers for me.

As several others have said, there are plenty of other roads up there that are much better.

Attached photo is from last July - mid-week. It was the last time that the "Porch" or I will ever be at Deal's Gap.

You all are invited to check one of my most favorite roads anywhere in the world. Hard to believe but there is not a car, motorhome or motorcycle in sight along the entire 90 miles with over 400 curves. You might see a few vehicles during summer holiday periods. Figure 4 hours from south to north, starting out around 2500 AGL to 9000 AGL.

Highway 191 from Morenci, AZ to Alpine AZ. 100 miles from Tucson, 50 years back in time:

Excellent analysis. Z car nut KNOWS many, many people will be driving at or below the speed limit on said roadway. (After all, how many people have gotten killed)? BUT, he chooses to drive on said roadway! I'm not sure who is the BIGGER MORON?!

Geez/I can't wait. My little girl starts at Barrett ASU in August and this gives me a great reason to ride out from Ocean City, MD and pretend that I am not really checking up on her. When we visited ASU this summer, my wife and I had a car and found some impressive roads and beautiful sights. Really, I can't wait!!!!
