Dodged a bullet yesterday
Sunday morning, went for a nice hour and half ride on my LT. Came home put the bike away grabbed the wife and kids (ages 6 and 10) jumped in our 2008 Honda Odyssey minivan to take them to lunch. Drove 1 block from my house, through an intersection and then BAMMM!..
24 year old exchange student blows through a red light at 40mph and nearly t-bones us. Fortunately I see him coming and swerve to give him a little extra room. He hits my back wheel on the driver side and continues about 200 ft down the road before stopping.
Driver side air bag deploys out of the seat and the side air curtain goes off, (3 rows deep about 7 feet long) slamming me in the head and my daughter in the face. (Felt like someone hit me over the head with baseball bat.) I was disoriented, I thought my head went trough the driver side window.
My daughter seems to be ok, she got hit 1 inch under her eye just missing her pupil. Her swelling went down. My head still hurts. The guy admitted to going through the light. He said he was looking at his GPS and wasnt watching the road. All in all, injuries are minor. All I could think of was thank God he didnt hit us on the side door where my daughter was sitting or hit me when I was on my bike. At that speed it would have been ugly.
This was my first auto accident in 29 years of driving. I think of myself as a pretty good defensive driver, but in the end, shit happens and it happens fast. I feel pretty lucky today.
