Watch out for deer in SC

Just got back from South Carolina and the deer were all over the place. It was hard to go for more than a few miles and not see several at a time. I was in my SUV and was still concerned. All over between Charleston and Columbia. Mostly around Summerton and Sumter. Must be venison season!

Re: Watch out for deer in SC

I drive from Murphy to ATL Airport at least once a week.
I leave the house at 0400. The leasson that I have learned, is to keep the high beams OFF!

Then you don't see them as often.

There are always lots of dead deer on the sides and in the middle of the road, especially lately.

These are pictures from my kitchen window last Sunday:

Please note there is a fairly busy road between the camera and the deer

_ Why is there never enough time to do it right the first time, but always enough time to do it over?

You always see alot of deer along the sides of the road this time of year, as this is the first place that the grass starts to green up. That new growth is like a magnet to them. Think kids in a candy store, so until everything else greens up and they move deeper into the woods.... Be Careful...

Re: Watch out for deer in SC

The fences along the interstate just give them something to jump over! Driving south of Ocala, Florida last year, on I-75 there were several grazing along the highway at night. The traffic didn't seem to bother them at all.

Re: Watch out for deer in SC

More than a dozen years ago I was coming back from a motorcycle rally in Jamestown VA,
got on I-95 in SC running with the flow of traffic at first light, dew still hanging over all the grassy areas.

Suddenly a few car lenghts in front of me tires were squealing and smoking

vehicles going in all directions,
a small herd of deer 5 or 6 ran across the interstate,
right behind them a pack of dogs,
the deer all made it, one dog got killed another hurt.

I pulled over waiting for a break in traffic to get the dog of the road,
a small truck pulled up,
pulled the collar of the dead dog, threw him in the ditch,
picked up the injured dog put him in the cages in the back of the truck and was gone.

All before I had a chance to decide if it was alright to ride on
or if I needed to change underwear first.

Re: Watch out for deer in SC

Dan the deer are most plentiful here, year round for the most part. Always on the look out especially at dusk.
