First and last ride for my Mom.

Well, I had a choice to make yesterday. My mother recently passed away unexpectantly. My father requested that I pick her up from the funeral home. ( She was cremated). My mom always worried about the two of her sons that rode bikes. She never had, and said she never would, ride on a bike.

She forbid my father from getting on a bike again after I let him ride my Honda 750 some 20 years ago and he came back in an ambulance. ( broken collar bone, sprained wrist and a few other hurts)

Anyway, decided to take the afternoon off to go get mom. As I started to walk to the Tahoe LT ( My big LT), I thought; "what the hell".

Grabbed the KLT's key's and took off. Picked mom up and took her for a ride. With Jimmy Buffett cranked up, we rode around town for a while. Figured if I didn't get a flat, or a dead battery, she was enjoying it.

One thing I know for sure; riding a bike is a whole lot safer ( for all of us) now that there is a new angel taking charge and protecting the bike riders down here. And the food up there has just gotten a whole lot better !

Now.....I'm wonderin' how mom would feel about a little skydiving.....

Don't worry Mom..I'll ride safe !

Re: First and last ride for my Mom.

When I got back into motorcycling after a multi-year hiatus, my mom was the first to chastise me! I remember her saying "the only way you'll ever get me onto one of those is in an urn!". Guess she has something in common with your mom, eh?

Thanks for sharing this story.

Like others have said thanks for sharing a person moment with us. My mother like yours can not believe that I ride one of those "donor" cycles. In the future maybe I can finally take her for a ride.

I carry a little bit of my mom and my golden retriever ( in separate containers - thank you) with me all the time on the bike. We have been to THE WALL twice and many other places.

I think you did good.

Re: First and last ride for my Mom.

Excellent

My step-mom actually rode on my first bike when I was 18, only once but that was pretty gutsy if you ask me (since I was driving! )

My dad is spread all over the great lakes. I though about keeping some with me but ya know, now I don't think it'd make any difference, I still feel like he's having a good time out there somewhere, that old boy sure loved life.

I think he passed that trait on 'cause I'm a bit biased that way myself!

Naw, she won't mind, skydiving is much safer than motorbikin', go for it!

Just watch your altitude, folks would ask "how do you know when to pull?"....I'd tell 'em "when people look like ants, pull...when ants look like people, pray" Try and stick to the first part of that rule though eh?

Re: First and last ride for my Mom.

I lost my mom not very long ago also. I think there is a special department up there for moms that have sons and husbands that ride motorcycles. At least they all will have something in common to talk about.

Re: First and last ride for my Mom.

Thanks for all the kind words. Just wish I knew how fast my mom can fly as an Angel so I don't exceed that speed.

Kinda cool follow up: I help my dad retrieve some boxes from storage yesterday and found their wedding and honeymoon pictures AND ( this was so cool) some portraits of my mom when she was a baby, approximately 4 +/- years old, and approximately 16 years old. My dad never recalls seeing them before. Spent several hours going through them with him. Never made it back to work.

He loved looking at the wedding and honeymoon pictures. He kept commenting on how beautiful she was. Okay...humidity must be rising as it is getting a little misty in here for me.

Thanks again.

Bill

Re: First and last ride for my Mom.

My Mum was a lot like yours. My Dad decided to try waterskiing one afternoon when she was conveniently out, but the blood on his face from where he hit the tip of the ski in a spectacular tumble across the bay was a bit of a giveaway. He retired from acrobatic waterskiing that same day.

I wish I'd thought of taking Mum for a ride after she passed away last summer. The ashen look (sorry) would have been in keeping with her life-long concern for everything risky my brothers and I did growing up. She coaxed my brother off a CB350 with a MGB GT, but nothing worked to get me off my bikes.

I do have one cherished picture with all 85 lbs of her astride my K100RS, looking like a tiny racer way out of proportion to the big bike. No helmet, either, which is something she would not tolerate.

Do they make helmets for urns?

Talking Re: First and last ride for my Mom.

Good post!

I took Dad for his first ride at 83. His new 80 year old German girlfriend Helga shamed him into it. He hated every motorcycle, Corvette, Porsche, M3.... I owned ....you get the idea. He didn't much like the hydroplane I built at 14 either. Flipped that little thing several times on the river. Dad just didn't understand my racing and riding all around the planet. Lost Dad last fall at 88. I love the shots of him on the bike with me. Helga also loves the shot of her on the BMW. Raised in Germany, she has fond memories of riding in her Dad's side car. They could not afford a car. Some Mom's love riding. Others just fret too much. Shot of Helga jumping on the LT attached.

I love taking folks for a ride. Great excuse to ride!!!!!!!

Re: First and last ride for my Mom.

Had to pick up my 80 year old dad Thursday night to bring him over for a BBQ dinner. Told him it was his turn on the Beemer. Picked him up and rode the 13 miles across town. First ride on a bike since he dumped my Honda 20+ years ago and broke his collar bone and my mom banned him from future rides.

Said he enjoyed it. He liked the intercom conversation.

That ride probably really ticked off my mom. Sorry Mom !

When my daughter saw me leaving with the LT to get him, she yelled "Dad...don't.. you better not kill Grandpa !"

I told her that I checked my schedule and that was not on the list of things to do today.

Then I realized that she never says anything to me when I leave on the bike alone...hmmmmm

Re: First and last ride for my Mom.

Great story and a fitting tribute to your mom from an obviously "proud son"

I lost my baby sister to cancer at 42, she literally had every treatment "in the book"
The doctors gave her 2 years with another 3-4 treatments of chemo or 6 months without.
She chose 6 months of "quality" life, what courage that must have taken.

When "my darling little sister" (that what she called herself whenever she called me on the phone)
passed I carried her ashes with my on the bike for more than a year.

I left a little part of her in all of the most beautiful places that I knew from the Florida Keys to the top of mount Mitchell and many other locations.

After a year or so I "had to let her go" I spread the remaining ashes in the Gulf of Mexico approximately where the sun sets from shore.
