5 dead snowmobilers in Maine..last weekend!

So far this winter, there have been nine snowmobile fatalities on Maine's 13,500 miles of snowmobile trails.

Of the nine deaths, six were caused by excessive speed, said Dan Martin, commissioner of the state Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

"Snowmobiles are powerful machines, some reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour and Maine trails simply are not designed for these high rates of speed," Martin said.

Public safety officials said in the news conference yesterday that they would step up patrols.

"It means more people out on the trails. ... It's twofold. It's enforcement and education," said Deborah Turcotte of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

The death count this season is the highest in several years but is lower than the record high of 16 fatalities in the winter of 2002-03.

Re: CNN reports

Unfortunately, there are many people in both sports that do not take it seriously enough to train themselves or even bother to think about the seriousness of what they are doing. When many of these gather in a popular place like Daytona or Sturgis this usually happens..............

Alcohol, egos, and being a show-off can result in tragedy.

Not to mention the guy or gal that had no helmet or any riding gear on which may or may not save your life or keep the damage to the body down completely. It may not help at all times and in every situation but It sure can't hurt to be prepaired. The odds are that when you get thousands of BMW riders together someone will get hurt or die due to the amount of people on bikes in one place at the same time.It is not a perfect world thats for sure and the best riders do go down at times and its never a pleasant thing to here about. Be safe ride smart and have a great time out there!

Atv

I bought a Polaris 500 ATV this weekend. When I called Polaris to check on insurance, the guy ask me if I wanted 'funeral insurance'. I had to ask him to repeat the question. I have never had that question asked. He said it was for $5,000 and motorcycle people get it but not ATV people. There must be a million lawsuits against them. You won't believe all the Don'ts.

Ride 'em if you got 'em.

Yeah, we have an event here in Reno, Street Vibrations. Lots of bikes, mostly Harleys, but a good mix of other brands too.

Every year there are a few crashes. A couple years ago it was particularly bad. Several fatalities. Too many of these list Alcohol as a factor when they are reported.

Speaking of fatalities: I just looked at the photos and see that everyone is appropriately dressed with all their riding gear....

Re: CNN reports

Sometimes big bike events gives biking a black eye.

But with so many people attending rallies etc, something is bound to happen
