Riding in your own back yard

You know, seems I'm always trying to think about places to ride to, you know..end destination stuff. Short, medium and longer trips I would like to take. Seems like never enough time for the long ones.

Anyway. knew there was to be great weather this weekend. Spent a lot of time trying to decide where to ride too. Most of them are "been there, done that" rides.

My friend called and suggested that we ride throughout the west Saguaro National Monument double back through it again, take a longer route around to one of the casinos for a late lunch.

Funny thing is we used to ride this route in our younger ( much younger) days. Back then we rode it for the fast twisty, hilly, catch some air, type of roads.

Today we rode it for the great ride and scenery that it is. Couldn't believe that such a great ride was so close to home.

I guess it goes to show that you sometimes can't see the forest through the saguaros. P.S. If any of these pictures look familiar this is the same area that many westerns, including John Wayne movies, and the High Chaparral series were filmed. Old Tucson Movie Studios are still located here.

Great pictures! Makes me envious--it was close to 50 degrees here and I wanted to take a ride but I had to go shopping with my SO...strike that...I got to go shopping. (Guess who was standing over my shoulder)

Ted: man, is the pic with you parked w/ the duc as downhill as it looks - if so, my LT would be facing the other way!

OK..so I asked my wife why I had slowed down at that point. She said that she needed to get the camera out of her pocket and the "bumps" would affect the picture.

The bumps, now that I remember, were something I never remember being there. They were like having cattle guard rails sticking out of the asphalt. They were spaced 4 at a time probably around 10 yards apart approaching this turn. Going over these on the turns approaching the main hairpin at teh top was a concerning experience. At least I will expect them next time. So as the wife remembers it , I slowed down for the picture.

This road ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fQPfWpQpLHw ) is very narrow and has a sharp drop off that many a teenager has found not to be the short cut to take down. This video starts just after the sharp turn at the top.

I think you misunderstood my post - I was referring to the pic of the two bikes PARKED, and the possibility of the LT rolling forward and dumping itself!

I'd never question anybody's decision to ride prudently, especially with the SO on board

Sorry Ted.... I guess I was in self-defense mode from the slow speed assaults on my driving ability

No we were actually parked on an uphill slope, I was just further uphill and it looks like it's down hill. Just like the picture of my speedo/tach..I was going so fast that they had circled around for a second time !

Nice "back yard" makes me drool

Reminds me of my earlier rides in WV. Grew up at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and didn't know there were straight roads till I moved to Florida. Really do miss the mountains at times..... not today thought!

Than You for the beautifull pictures. It just so happens that I am considering relocating to Tuscon and have been doing some research on places to live in that area. Trying to make time for a visit pretty soon.

Well if you move here you will have to put up with year round riding weather. Keeping your ice in the freezer not in the driveway. A lil bit of heat, but it's a dry heat (most of the time).

Let me know when you come down. Just got back from riding the LT, have to switch to the 4-wheel LT ( Tahoe LT)

current conditions:
52 Clear
Feels Like: 52
Wind: SSE/6 mph
Humidity: 40%
Dewpoint: 28
Barometer: 30.09 in
Visibility: 10 mi

Have a good one !!

Nice.

First time I ever rode in my back yard was at the age of 12. I fired up my father's bike (98cc 2-stroke runabout) and rode it across the lawn! Got into trouble for the skid marks in Mom's nice grass......

Objects in mirror may be disappearing faster than they seem...
