Thumbs down Rut Ro! Being a Google junkie . . .

I came upon this LINK researching info on the "Boxer" engine.

"Green" is taking all the fun out of life . . . but then again, life really begins when you leave your comfort zone.

Air cooled engines in general are going to be in trouble with emissions standards in the very near future. I've heard rumors that Harley Davidson is considering a version of the water cooled V-Rod engine as a future replacement for the current air cooled V-Twin.

BMW was planning on dropping the boxer altogether when the first inline-4 K-bikes were introduced. But popular demand forced them to keep producing and improving them to what we have today. And as mentioned, all manufacturers of air-cooled bike motors are seeing similar constraints.

But I'm not so sure the Green crowd can be so easily dismissed. While growing up in SoCal in the 70s, we would regularly have "smog days" where we weren't allowed to run around outside at recess, or sometimes not even be allowed outside at all. And most of the time, you couldn't even see the local mountains due to the constant haze in the air. Tightening the emissions requirements on all vehicles and especially clamping down on excessive polluters has pretty much ended the days of smog alerts, although I do agree that the environmentalists can get quite excessive and push things well beyond reason.

All lower 48 states plus Alaska on the K13GT in two weeks . . .

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Ken,
I don't disagree. Green has become mainstream with new legislation eliminating filament incandescent lights in a few years, adding gasohol, and commercial garden roofs (one of my new specialties), CA Title 24 Energy Code, etc. I finished HS in Whittier in the late 60's moving from New England and wondered where the blue sky went. Part of the weather forecast was a potential Smog Alert.

Anywho, with new commercial advances we have moved from drum brakes (on my 1st BMW R50) to ABS disks and other great technologies.

Wonder if they will outlaw 2-cycle oil fuming Vespas? (Had one of those too and used it as a dirt bike in the orange groves!
