Thumbs up eBay fever strikes again!!!

Well I just could not resist and got Item number: 120193455879, BMW K1200 LT Rear Final Drive and Brake Rotor. This came off a 2005 BMW with 15000 miles.
This means I will have a spare in my garage.
Perhaps we should track down the spare final drives owned by members of this forum all over the country so it will be easier to track them down in case of emergency.

Well I could not resist this.

"New BMW K1200 LT Rear Final Drive and Brake Rotor. This came off a 2008 BMW with 0 miles on it.Excellent condition. These retail for over $1200 last I checked. View Seller's Other Items for other parts from 1999-2007 triked BMW's. Buyer pays shipping."

So add another South Central PA with a spare FD.

Hell whats another 400 for peace of mind.

I will box it with the Clymer, and the socket/allen wrench, torque wrench. Then when I go away for some distance I will give it to my sister and she can overnight it to me if needed. Sure takes a LOT of worry off me on this issue. Getting home is all I care about, warranty or no.

And of course if a stranded traveler needs it to get home from around me I will help.

Giles,
I bought the 2001 w/20K miles miles as a back up on eBay today also. Price was right!

Anybody publish a "How To" for the change-out yet?

I saw one last month go off for $108 for a 2000 LT. It was right after Black Friday and the CFO said NO!

Quick question - what model year did the pickup sensor for the ABS and speedo get changed off the FD housing? I can't remember.

Thanks, Stephen - I wuz thinking that the newer FD housing eliminated the speedo/cc sensor location that older models, like ole Toad, had. The eBay item is listed as a 2003, and has the sensor location just like ole Toad. Maybe they didn't relocate that sensor until '04 or newer model years.

Thanks, Pete. Thought so. Guess the seller got his info from somewhere unreliable. I think I'll ping him and set him straight. Thanks again, guys.

Wink Visual Difference in Drives

If you look at Post # 7 in this thread you will see a later model (02 or 03-Current?) Final Drive without the Pickup on top.

Post # 8 shows the earlier (99-01 or 02?) version with the Pickup on top like our Bikes would use.

Not really sure what year they made the switch to Integral Brakes, but that would be the time frame. I'm thinking that it was 02, but there may be some out there with the Non-Integral brakes, just not sure.

It was 2002 when they switched to integral braking. I had a 2001 and it did have the black speed sensor in the top right side. 2002 and up do not.

Thanks, Jack. I pinged him and spelled it out. Hate to see him ruin that awesome 'satisfaction rating' he has. And with over 62,000 items!

I haven't heard anything, and I don't look to - just hope the buyer gets it squared away.

Yep, it was on the '02 bikes with the Integral brakes. If the brake calipers say Brembo it's the older style. If they say BMW then it's the newer style. Also, all years use the same rear brake pads, but the front pads changed in '02 with the BMW Integral brakes.

They actually switched in the middle of the 2001 build year as I have seen several 2001 units with the integral brakes. The rear drives will all work to get you there - just no speedo pickup for the early bikes with a late drive and a hole to cover on the later bikes with an early drive.

OK..so I think I'm confused, but i think I am understanding the confusion. Post # 7 is actually the later model FD for 2002 up, Post #8 is the earlier models 1999-2001 +/- 1/2 year.

So.... since my 2000 FD looks like post #8, then the one on E-Bay is for the earlier models.

Awaiting clarification from the professors at the BMWLT-U. Want to get a good grade on my Final (drive) Exam.

Here's my 00LTC FD:

Not quite. post # 7 is also for the '99-01. If you look closely you can see the sensor hole on the top surface.
