If the final drive is still good, it'd be worth $500.

Or just strip the motor out of it and build one of these.

I thought once a vehicle had a salvage title, it stayed that way for life?

That's what I was thinking. I was also thinking that once it had a salvage, then Texas would not let it go back on the road.

I expect Tony will snap this one up if it's for real.

Just part it out and it'll live on as part of another bike.

I have a piece of El Jeffe's LT on mine...

I hope it brings me good luck...

Edit: ON second thought. We should buy it and turn it into a bonfire at the next CCR.........

Title repair depends on the state the bike is repaired in. They are all differant. When this bike was repaired, GA would issue a clear title, of course salvage history never goes away. That is why I always tell people it has salvage history. Bikes repaired now are issued a "salvaged-repaired" title.

And if it is a custom built bike, you know, mail order frame, motor, wheels,... GA recently stoped issueing titles all together!

Speaking for myself, I'd first have to test ride it to make sure it doesn't have the dreaded front end wobble at 40mph.

The rusty pipe hanger strap holding the fairing on is a nice touch. Can't have a rat bike without a little rust on it somewhere!

This bike is a STEAL, on second thought. Since half the tupperware is already off, maintanence would be a snap!

Dealer would probably only charge $150.00 for the 12k maintenance...

Once the bike's been rebuilt, I think you can take it down, get it inspected, go by the tax office with the old title and get a new one. *I think. *I'll let you know if I ever get around to getting the old Connie back together.

Most times with a Salvage title, you can rebuild/reconstruct.
The Machine has to be brought up to par with everything repaired that the state which it is salvaged in requires, for inspection.
(Like they require brakes on a bike, but not ABS etc.)

About 4 years ago I was looking for a project. I thought about Goldwings but there are so many of them I was afraid I would have a hard time selling them. Then I came across a LT on ebay, the black bike. It was hurt on the right side. Not long after that the rat bike popped up, hurt on the left side. I thought This could work! A steady supply of bikes on ebay, patch them up and sell on ebay. The black bike turned out great, so great I road it for 2 years before trying to sell it. That is when reailty kicked in, BMWs are hard to sell with salvage history. During this time I kept buying parts to repair the rat bike but just could not come up with enough parts to make a nice bike. Then one day I realise I have enough to make it road worthy, it just would not be pretty. I have been riding it for about 2 years now, BMW does make a tough bike.

In the mean time I also did a K12RS and a R1150GS. I sold the RS, it was going to get me in trouble, I still have the GS. I didn't like the GS at first but it's growing on me and I find I ride the GS more than the rat bike now.

Oh well the bike didn't sell, I guess DaveDragon is right, I can't sell the rat bike.

Maybe next I'll try selling parts off it. I wonder how many I can sell and still keep it on the road?

You may want to talk to Tony (Deputy5211) and visit his web site http://www.ltparts.com/
The two of you can figure out if you should buy parts or sell for parts...

You would think that going into 2008 all the states DMV's would "talk" to each other so we could all agree on a salvage title--or not.

Well, a clear title would be more of that "unnecessary stuff," anyways!

Personally, I think you're nutz for wanting to sell it. It just reeks of COOLNESS! I just might have to buy that thing from you, since you obviously don't appreciate it!

In Louisiana a bike or car with a salvage title, has to be inspected by a State police officer, all the receipts have to be shown, with salvaged title, upon his signature, new title will be issued!

Some salvage history?! Title clear now??!! Amazing. With the technology of today, you can still get a "cleaned" title.

I have always been amazed by the salvage phobia I find on this site. I have heard of LT's going into salvage mode from a 0 mph tip over. If an LT sustains scratches on several body panels it is declared a total in the older bikes. If you replace with new plastic it is as good as before. Maybe even better. If there is no drive train or frame damage what is the big deal?

I can imagine how amazed you would be once you find out you have a salvaged bike! "Title cleaning" scams are very common. The reason for it is obvious. Regardless of why the unit has a salvaged title, it is still salvage. W/O a "cleaned" title, the bike is practically worthless.

Re: The LT Of Your Dreams!

I think it should be disclosed that it once had a salvaged title. Then depending on the damage you could make a informed decision on the bike. I have seen a lot of bikes on this site that have minor damage and have been rebuilt to prior condition. Then they are sold for thousands off what it is really worth. If I were to buy another "used" LT I would probably search out a rebuild. Of course you would have to know what to look for. I think most people here on this site are pretty honest and would trust a member who has been here for awhile. Buying a salvage bike off ebay maybe another deal altogether. I sold a salvaged bike. It was my own for two years and 50k miles. It was an excellent and dependable bike before hand so it deserved to be put back right. It only had minor scratches on several body panels. Along with a broken headlight and windshield mechanism. I took most of a year to tear her down to the frame and cleaned and lubed things that saw no maintenance since the factory. The frame did not even have a scratch on her. I replaced all the parts and she ran better than she ever did for me prior to the accident. I sold it for 5k instead of the 7-8k she would have been worth. I was so confident in the bike I sold it to a friend I work with every day. She is still a great and trouble free bike That I would not think twice about taking on a 10k cross country ride.

Unfortunately this is the exception rather than the rule. Good luck insuring a bike with a salvage title in California!!!!

Red face Re: The LT Of Your Dreams!

Thank guys. after reading the last few post I went back and re-read the currant ad and I saw I was not clear about the title history. I contacted the buyer and he did not know about salvage history and we agreed to not complete the transaction. He was glad I informed him and I was glad I didn't have to explain what had happened to a anger customer after the fact.

In the end I think every thing is going to work out. A local fellow saw the bike on ebay but didn't get a bid in intime.

When writing an ad, it's amazing how easy it is to leave out the obvious.

To the guys who said don't sell. I don't want to sell it but I'm just not comfortable owning two bikes and it seams like I ride the GS more often than the rat bike any way. I will miss the light truck capabilities though.

Or even registering it. You have to take it to a specially certified vehicle inspection shop so that all systems can be certified as road worthy. Of course, sky is the limit on what you can be charged to do this. They know that you can not register or insure the bike prior to getting the "official" ok.

It's what I would call penny wise and pound foolish. All the trouble that you have to go through to register and insure it is not worth the salvaged savings! That's why salvage title "cleaning" scams are so popular.
