Evel Knievel dies at 69

This marks the end of an era...

http://www.abclocal .go.com/kabc/ story?section= news/sports&id=5804157

CLEARWATER, Fla., Nov. 30, 2007 - Evel Knievel, the hard-living motorcycle daredevil whose exploits made him an international icon in the 1970s, died Friday. He was 69.
Knievel's death was confirmed by his granddaughter, Krysten Knievel. He had been in failing health for years, suffering from diabetes and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition that scarred his lungs.
Knievel had undergone a liver transplant in 1999 after nearly dying of hepatitis C, likely contracted through a blood transfusion after one of his bone-shattering spills.

He was a vert nice man and humble in one of the more uppity places I managed: Scioto Country Club, in central ohio. He took the time to talk with me about bikes and riding before his round of golf. I was pretty young in about 1984 and he was already looking in poor health.

Good memories-Great Showman!!!

Robert Craig "Evel" Knievel, Jr. (October 17, 1938 November 30, 2007)

A master showman indeed. His jumps were always big TV nights at our home when I was a kid.

Rest in peace.

Interesting information on his life here.

There were many days on my bicycle I was Evel. I remember how jealous I was when my friend got the stunt bike toy for Christmas.
He was one of my heroes as a kid. He got knocked down but he always got up.

All lower 48 states plus Alaska on the K13GT in two weeks . . .

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

Yep, same here. Jumping trash cans, other bikes, other kids, off the school roof, it didn't matter. I bent a lot of wheels and broke a lot of bikes, but I learned how to fix them and keep going. Good memories.

I met Evel at a sushi bar in Vegas about 4 years ago. Just sitting there enjoying his spider rolls by himself. Real nice guy, and would talk to people that recognized him.

We joked a bit, and I suggested he change his name to "Not Such a Bad Guy, Once You Get to Know Him"!

Let's see Ken...it was posted by a guy named CCCPASTORJACK and watched by a guy who has as his tag line "...learn by doing, as opposed to thinking."

You're doing...you're learning...

No harm intended. I just loved the raw, unbridled way he talked about what he called the greatest event in his life.

All Harleys ???

Great come back CCCPASTORJACK. Would have to agree it was the "Best Jump of his life".

I was wondering if anyone knew if every bike he jumped was a Harley ? I think they were all 750's. just wondering if he ever jumped other makes/models.

Jack, I could see you doing that... Well, maybe on a GT. I was in the south a few months ago, getting written up for going 44 in a 40 mph zone.

A blue GT goes screeming past, with the front wheel off the ground - and I ask the officer why that guy isn't getting a ticket? He says, "I can't write him up, that's my Pastor!"
