Fourth Annual Black Hills BMW Motorcycle Rally Kicks off
Friday July 6th In Spearfish

SPEARFISH, S.D --- “ON THE WAY TO THE MOA!” That’s the theme for the 2007 BMW Stampede. Event officials hope to capture riders heading East on I-90 to West Bend, Wisconsin for the 35th Annual BMWMOA International Rally July 12th.

The BMW Stampede officially starts Friday, July 6th at noon with registration at Chris’ Campground in Spearfish. Around 5:00 pm rally participants will then cruise to Main Street Spearfish. This year, partnering with the Downtown Business Association’s First Friday’s event, Main Street will feature an evening motorcycle show & shine, poker walk, live radio remote, food, and welcome reception at Horses to Harley’s pub. Open container will be allowed in the designated area and local entertainer Brock Finn will kick off the festivities.

“You do not need a BMW to park your bike on Main Street during the Show and Shine,” event official Aaron Terveen said. “Registered or not, everyone is welcome to attend.”

On Saturday, the “Six Gun” poker run registration begins at Chris Campground. All riders who would like to participate are welcome to register at the campground between 7-10 am. A portion of the proceeds from this year’s run will go to benefit the Northern Hills Training Center.

The evening rounds off back at Chris’ Campground with a Wild West Chuckwagon Feed, awards ceremony with over $2,000 in riders gear & giveaways, and live entertainment by Gordy Pratt.

Post `07 BH BMW Recap

Despite record temperatures in the Black Hills, over 175 BMW riders conversed in Spearfish, SD July 6th through the 8th at the fourth annual Black Hills BMW Stampede.

It was a steady hum as BMW motorcycles of all makes and models entered Chris’ Campground and claimed a shady spot that would become their home for the weekend. The campground pavilion was open for business as registration, information, t-shirt and beverage sales remained steady throughout the afternoon.

Then, the Spearfish Police Department showed up! No, it’s not what you are thinking. The PD was there to safely escort a hundred plus riders to downtown Spearfish where Main St. was blocked for the annual BMW Show n Shine and celebration. A poker walk, sidewalk sales, open container, social and live entertainment by Brock Finn and Corduroy Vinyl greeted the group. So did the community. At one point, Stampede officials estimated 300 plus spectators mingling and admiring the motorcycles.

Saturday, IT WAS HOT!! Temperatures reached around 104. But, that didn’t stop over 110 participants embarking on the 200 mile poker run through the scenic Black Hills. Riders got their chance to encounter the buffalo heard in Custer State Park, view Mt. Rushmore memorial, and ride some of the finest cruising roads the Black Hills has to offer.

By five o’clock, stomachs were grumbling and it was time to for the Wild West chuckwagon meal. The meal was unique to say the least. It consisted of a combination of homemade sausage, corn & potatoes, and was cooked up in about a dozen old cream cans atop propane burners. When served, the meal was laid out in giant troughs as attendees went through the line with tongs.

The awards ceremony followed with a brief presentation by BMWMOA Ambassador Deb Lower. Cash prizes, special recognition awards, riders gear, and a club donation to the Northern Hills Training Center in Spearfish followed. After that, it was time to relax. A giant swamp cooler in the pavilion kept the temperature down while people enjoyed an ice cold beverage while listening to the fabulous Gordy Pratt’s musical comedy show.

Stampede officials stated that 2007 has been the biggest year so far for attendance. But, they have high expectations of shattering that record next year. With Spearfish just a little over 100 miles away from the chosen site for the 2008 MOA Nationals, you can expect next year’s Stampede will be big, exciting, and just before the Nationals.
