"Wife beater" follow up

I have been trying to find out how the individuals that were involved in the accident came out. The information was released in the media today.

The news was not good. The rider was mediflighted to OKC and is in critical condition. The passenger was treated locally and released the next day.

I can tell you from what I witnessed at the accident (I left out the gory details) that I am quite sure that the rider injuries that are critical are due to a head injury.

I write about this because these riders were not wearing helmets (media reports said that it was unclear if they were wearing helmets or not). The collision was a relatively low speed collision where helmets could have made a lot of difference. My motivation is to convince just one more person that they should wear a helmet and other safety gear.

Please Wear Your Gear ! ! !

I was on my way to Home Depot this mornin around 7:45 am rush hour traffic. As I round a bend in a very busy RM road I see a Harley on it's side, about 30 ft away STANDS a guy in full face helmet, jacket with armer, gloves, bluejeans and boots. I stop to make sure he was ok, and he was . A car just changed lanes into him and kept going. There was scratches on his helmet and his leg was bleeding from a lil road rash. but all in all he was fine. The jacket and gloves did there job. I am very please to post a positive response to what could have been ANOTHER motorcycle related accident

I know a few myself... Harley Sportster, leather jacket with reinforced shoulder pads and elbows, Boots, gloves (with fingers), and 3/4 helmets. They are middle aged folks who bought a bike, took the BRC class, and try to put some miles on their machines. When I ride with the I tend to baby them as they are new riders. Sometimes I cringe when I see how they corners, but I remember that I did some of the same mistakes when I first started riding, at the tender age of 14 (legal age in France to ride a moped). Experience comes with time and miles under your belt. The protective gear is there to make sure you do get there...

Similar story out here yesterday.

3 Harley's run'n up and down the main drag in a 'triangle' - enjoying life. No helmets. Too close together.

1st one checks up, 2nd gets 'locked up' into him side by side, 3rd tries to run over the 1st 2 and does the rag-doll over top of 'em. 1st one walks away. 2nd gal gets to ride the slow backboard to the ER - likely she'll be OK I think. 3rd guy - stopped himself by catching a planter on the sidewalk with his face. You know it's bad when it's a Code 3 return to the ER. He got the turbo backboard. IF he survives and isn't spending the rest of his life next to the other vegetables at the local long term care facility, he'll never look the same.

Slow speed - less than 30mph. 1 helmet would've made a BIG difference. 3 and this would've been a paperwork hassle of the insurance agents. Not a life ruined and horrible memories for all.

Zotter, that's exactly why CA instituted the helmet law (was signed by Pete Wilson, a Republican) - because the state was tired of spending millions of $$ on wards in vegetable houses.

Trying to force people into being safer was a by-product!

The helmet law in Kal is a joke. Pure symbolism over substance! So typical of big government socialism The "salad bowl" with the little cute chin strap, that you see all the H-D boys wearing, meet the standards of the Kal helmet law. Well, you don't have to be a rocket fuel genius to figure out that they offer virtually no protection!

Now, what was the bigger joke? Pete Wilson signing such a law or calling himself a republican? We may forever debate......

Brain, I am surprised that you would use the Kalifornia helmet law as a basis for a public safety argument.....or Wilson as an example of a Republican.

It's not just a Harley thing, lately I've noticed quite a few BMW riders wearing shorts and Tshirts. Few weeks ago an LT ride in wearing SANDALS! I was a bit embarrassed cause I brought a Harley friend to the event,(who wears full gear). I personally can't control what others do. I try and take the opportunity to promote wearing proper gear when asked, or when I hear the comment "Isn't that stuff hot"? That's an invitation for them to get my views....

After I saw a rider sliding on the concrete for several hundred yards, right in front of me, I don't even want to wear short sleeves anymore!

Garage
LT'er in shorts

Last weekend I rode from Vegas to Panguitch Utah for a rally. Heading north on I-15, I saw several LT's and Wing's heading south. Out of the six or so bikes I saw (at different times) none of them had on a jacket neither did the S.O. 4 of them were wearing shorts. And I swear one guy had on sandals.

No full-face helmets. NO safety gear at all. No camelback that I could see...

If you did crash and live to tell about it, the pavement is so hot your skin will fry like an egg... PLEASE wear you gear in the hot desert... It will keep you cooler than you think (and drink a lot of water)
