Question Vacation Help: Texas & New Mexico

OK - I've gotten approval from SWMBO for a vacation - even managed to get an extra three or four days too.

Anyway - the general plan is to leave Long Island July 30 and hot foot it down to Texas, meander with a slight purpose across Texas to Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, meander with a little less purpose up to Mesa Verde. After Mesa Verde its off to C. Springs to visit family by around August 9th or 10th and then get lost until its time to go home.

So, I have some questions: First, from a casual glance at the map, it looks like Texarcana is where I'll be entering Texas - I hope to cross over the top of Texas to Carlsbad. How long might this take if I my goal were to try to make time on backroads? Any backroads or town suggestions?

Next, basically the same question for New Mexico: Starting from Carlsbad Caverns and heading North up to Mesa Verde. This time I'll be looking for a more relaxed ride and will be willing to do side trips and some sightseeing (I love roadside oddities and goofball museums.)

I'll be camping most of the way if that matters for your suggestions.

Thanks guys,
Bruce.

I'm not familiar enough with the roads to give you route suggestions, but if you visit Carlsbad Caverns stay for the evening bat show. About a billion (slight exaggeration) bats leave the cave each night to go eat bugs. They pretty much all leave at the same time in what looks like a large black funnel.
Qualifies as a road side oddity.

Have a great ride.

Enchanted Circle when you get around Taos, NM.
My favorite place for dinner in Taos is Orlandos.
It'll be hot down south so drink more H20 than you
normally do. You'll need to be prepared for very hot
to cool weather.
From Albuquerque take the Turquoise Trail(14) up to Santa Fe.
PM me if you need anything else.
This pic was on the Enchanted Circle on my RT.

For a great "goofball museum" check out the UFO Museum in Roswell, NM. It's right on your way north out of Carlsbad. Then, on your way home ffrom Mesa Verde check out Bishops Castle, CO165 just west of Colorado City. Careful crossing Texas in July. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!

Thanks Mike -

I've been playing "connect the dots" with AAA maps, and chose the Turquoise Trail kind of by accident. And the pic of the Enchanted Circle looks great.

re: H2O: I've picked the worst time of year to hit this area of the country, but I've got other things dictating my life, and that's when I could go. I'll probably be carrying 6 liters of water with me, and I tend to stop about every two hours, so I'll be refilling a lot (and emptying out too I hope).

Later,
Bruce.

Hey Bruce I'm sure some of the Texas boys will chime in and agree but there ain't much of anything in that part of Texas the best part is down around Austin and Fredericksburg (Texas Hill Country)

As for backroads in the northern part they are flat and straight,
the good news is that the speed limit is usually 75.

I'll have to go along with what's already been said about Northern NM and the enchanted cirle
but there ain't nothing "below" that
