New Long-Distance Motorcycle Club

It's probably safe to say that many of you are experiencing long delays in receiving your Iron Butt certifications. I know I am, submitted paperwork 9/5/2006 and still waiting.

Sousing the inverse of a popular saying, If you cant join em, beat em, Im contemplating beginning a new long-distance motorcycle riding association. The pic below will be the logo, but Im having trouble coming up with a name.

Any suggestions??

I hope you're just joking?

That picture closely resembles the old Aerostitch advertisement,

I always though that was the "dumbest" damn picture to use to advertise motorcycling of any kind,
I think the general public already prefers to view "motorcyclists" in general in a negative way.
To popularize a half naked rider laying horizontal on his bike doesn't make a bit of sense to me.
How long do you think it would be before some dumb-ass kid imitating that kills himself?

Hans, that's a classic pic of Rollie Free breaking the motorcycle land speed record at the Bonneville Salt Flats on September 13, 1948. Apparently, his leathers had torn and were flapping and creating drag, so he did another run without them and reached a speed of 150.313 mph. He was riding a specially tuned production model Vincent Black Lightning.

Geez, haven't you seen The World's Fastest Indian? Sometimes you gotta break the rules to break the records.

Not quite true: the IBA has at least one, and usually more, paid staff members. The backlog seems to be due to a shortage of people trained to do the verifications, which are volunteers, I believe. I've been a member of the IBA for a long time and am, quite frankly, disgusted with the delays and the fact that they don't seem to care enough about it to do something.

Yes - I am joking!

But, I LOVE this picture, and, Aerostich is selling framed pics for $45.00!

What I don't understand about Aerostich is their inclusion of a certain pic below on the cover of their last full catalog. From the upper right, count 1 left and 3 down. Guess this is why I am not in marketing.

Sure does sound to me like the IBA needs to hire. If I did an IB ride, went through all of the trouble doing the paper work, sent it in with my $42 (or whatever the fee), I'd expect my stuff in under 90 days. And I think that's being more than fair.

That's about the time frame it used to be. For my Saddlesore 1000's in 8/2003 and 9/2004 - both certs arrived in about 3 months.

My 2005 ride took 90 days to receive the certs; last year's combined SS/BB done exactly one year later is now approaching 9 months of anticipation. It appears that the IBA is understaffed and Mike Kneebone is probably creating a bottleneck by micro-managing the verification process. If the discontent among the IBA members continues to grow due to this then a competitor could emerge.

Could be called the Organization of Long Distance Free Americans Riding To Somewhere, or OLDFARTS.

My June SS ride was certified via email exactly 10 months to the day of my ride. Ride was done on a Friday and documentation was mailed to the IBA the following Monday morning and should have arrived in late June.

I noticed that on one of the group rides noted in one of the post on this site it was mentioned (implied) that certification would be handled faster because of the relationship of the ride sponsors and the IBA. That did not make me fee warm and fuzzy.

If a CC50 rider has not gotten his certification, it totally blows my idea that longer harder rides were getting pushed to the top of the pile and thus causing the delays.

Note: in several of my emails to the IBA regarding the delays I mentioned my concern that my, and anyone else waiting a long time, check for payment would be stale dated (over 6 months old) and could possibly be refused by my bank. Sure enough, I got my check back with my certificate along with a request for a replacement - which I did send in.

Keep contacting them to check on the status. I was asked to furnish ride information to them to help find my information on two separate occasions; but I am not sure it actually made any difference at all - other than to shut me up for a while.

Wink Long Duration Rider's Club

The LDRC (Long Duration Rider's Club) is an organization for rider's who spend long hours in the saddle; these riders don't need to need to keep a record of miles or hours in the saddle, and no certificates of acheivement are awarded. Apparently these riders ride just for the pleasure of the road and the memories and "don't need no certificate". So far, none of the thousands of riders who are eligible to join this organization have formally signed up. It seems membership is automatic and honorary, and the members just seem to know who they are.

C'mon Brett, it takes more than derision from an outsider to shake the truly faithful, but then you oughta know that. After all, this particular obsession isn't for everyone. If it was, it would become commonplace and lose its intangible appeal. For the true believers it isn't about outside recognition, or the scoffing of those who just don't understand, but more of a convenient set of guidlines against which to test one's own mettle.
