My first 2 week ride vacation.
We'll be in Rapid City July 2, 3, 4
Sheridan on the 5th
Then on to Red lodge and Yellowstone, Jackson Lake.

Would appreciate so local info for Rapid City area, maybe meet up with someone(s) and ride to a local BMW dealer, tell us best place to see Fireworks etc. Oh ya and good places to eat.

Attached is my mapsource route and a pic of part of the crew hopefully.

Sounds like a great trip!

When one of my H-D buddies wants to ride with me, I try and keep it around 55 so he can keep up!

If you want a great 4th of July show and fireworks. Spend the day at Mt. Rushmore.
I was there 2 years ago. They had it on the 3rd that year and I spent the whole day there.

Ditto what tnk12lt said. Mt. Rushmore fireworks are the best I've seen, they launch them from the top of the President's heads. Their show is on July 3, which we discovered by accident. Go early (like, morning), save yourselves a seat in the ampitheater, prepare to spend an hour or two waiting to get out of the parking lot after.
Best of all, it's free...

Another Ditto on the Mt. Rushmore for the 4th. Even the pictures on calendar and in books look awesome.

Talking vacation on 2 wheels

Going to Mt Rushmore, take the time to go down an see Crazy Horse. If you don't it will mean another trip. Which in not all that bad.

Also try to swing by the Devil;s tower in WY. It is a short ride from the
rapid city area.

ENJOY,ENJOY, I know the wife and I did back in 1990. An we were on a 1974 R90/6. It sure would be nice to do again on the LT.

If my body don't object to that many mile in the saddle.

OK, so if we spend July 3rd at Mt. Rushmore, what is there to do? Do we bring picnic? or is it food vendors? Other things to do in the park? I've never been there.

There is a cafeteria in the park and there will be some food vendors also.
There are short hikes and things to see in the museum. The entertainment begins around 1 pm. But I got there at 7 am in order to get a good seat and in order to get a parking spot in the covered garage. You really don't have to get there that early though. Fireworks at 9:15pm
Expect to wait 1 hour to get out of there.

We could slightly alter our path out and go through Riverton and Casper on July 10? Looks like a nice ride on the map on the way to Cheyenne.

Totally up to you - this is *your* ride. Of course, I'd love to visit with anyone who was going through. The 10th is a 'work day', so visit opportunities may well be limited. Now, if you give me an excuse to take a day off, well .

Just know it's an option - door is open, coffee pot is full and if the timing is right, there's often a roast in the oven. But plan and ride your own ride

Well this could be interesting. I've changed the route to forget about Cheyenne, and go to Scottsbluff. Its actually a short cut of 50 miles for us.

Scottsbluff - the left side of 'Middle of no where' - or was that 'Right Arm-pit of the world', hard to tell. (I gotta pick on Nebraska, it's in our constitution or something).

Seriously, we do clean out the pens once a month - whether they need it or not!

(wait till you get next to some of the big, industrial hog farms in Eastern WY or Western, NE. Sheeeessshh - you would beg for just BO)

Back from the trip

We stopped at Sturgis BMW to buy a rear tire.
And we had to buy extra Harley oil for the 4600 mile oil slick trail we left behind us, but everybody ran great.

Here are some pics

hope you like
