Exclamation MESSENGER13 NEEDS HELP! Joe Broken Down in Reno, NV

Joe just called me and the rear drive appears to have failed on his GT. He is in the process of getting towed from Lovelock, NV back to the dealership in the Reno/Sparks, NV area so he can get them started on things as early as possible tomorrow. If someone lives in the area and can direct him to a hotel/motel near the dealership, or maybe meet him and help him get situated once he gets to Sparks, he would greatly appreciate it. If you can help out please call him on his cell phone -

440-759-8235

Thanks in advance for the assistance!

I just spoke to Joe. He is in Sparks with the bike at the dealer and is situated at a motel.

Joe,

Sorry to hear about your trouble. I hope the dealership gets you repaired and on your way soon. I guess it is all just part of the adventure.

Good Luck,
Kevin

A Quick update - They tried to install a 07 rear drive off a bike on the floor but the ABS sensor was different (brake system changed). They had an 06 GT on the floor with 4k miles and gave joe the option of taking that one or waiting for an overnighted rear drive to come in tomorrow. He took the one that's on site (bird in the hand rings true) and should be on the road shortly. He plans to hit the road once repairs are completed and cover as much ground as he can today.

And yes, the dealer flushed and renewed the fluid in the 4k old rear drive.

Yes, yes, that's all well and good but Joe get to meet his hero Lt. Dangle when they got Reno 911 on the case?

Whhhaaaatttt....?

It's "JUST JOE"!

(sure is fun beating up on him when he's not around)

I think I better watch my six (that's pilot slang for "rear") when he gets back!

On a sober note:

I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT GT REARS ARE FAILING..... and the sad thing is that there have been many. One woulda' thunk that they would be bulletproof... very bad news for BMW.

Kevlar belts, anyone?

Hi Joe,
Sorry I missed you. As usual, I'm a day late and a dollar short. I didn't pick up on this thread until just now. Would have enjoyed meeting you and giving you the nickel tour of our area. Glad things worked out for you on the repairs, and hope the remainder of your trip is problem free, but eventful in a good sort of way.
Cheers,

Glad you guys are having so much fun at my expense. Go ahead! Kick me when I'm down!

OK...the truth is, I needed the chuckle when I logged on tonight, and this thread is just what the doctor ordered. I'm in Wells, Nevada tonight. Got a cheap room, a good hot meal, and two mighty fine Taddy Porters. And a great cup of coffee to go. Now I just need to get some shut-eye, and I'll be on the road come 6am.

The saga continues...

First I have heard of it, Ron. How many other members have had their GT's fail on them? I know Joe does not have the mileage on his bike to have such a serious problem occur.

Talked to Joe last night. He was just west of Omaha, NB and the bike performed flawlessly all day. The only slight mishap he had was, while filling up his tank, a june bug dive bombed him and went straight into the fuel cell. He tried to fish him out, but he apparently died and sank quicker than he could do that. The good news is he's big enough to get caught in the fuel filter, the bad news is Joe will probably have to stop 6-8 inches sooner due to lost fuel capacity.

I asked the same question, Pete!

We have heard from several members who have had rear end failure on their LT's. BUT, first I have heard of rear end failure on GT's. I received a recall mailing from BMW re the GT and cold weather condensation issues. BUT, I have heard of no other issues so far. The recall was meaningless to me because I never ride at the temp's that the prob's occur at.

If there are issues with the GT I would sure like to hear from said owners. That way, when I get stuck in the middle of BFE, at least I've had fair warning!

Joe got stuck, you've had fair warning.

The "new" rear end failed on numerous GS's the first year, some as early as a few hundred miles. There have also been failures on the S, the R, and the RT. BWM actually added a drain plug and dropped the "maintenance free" crap so that should tell you how bad the problem was/is. This was not an isolated instance. With the revised service recommendations the modified rear may be good as gold at this point, but who knows...

Hey Joe,

I just have a couple of questions about all this: Why is it when you break down you just happen to be in Reno, NV and when ever I break down I am in B.F.E.? How does that work Joe?

I can just hear the phone conversation now:

Me: "Hi Honey, Bad news. My scoot broke down today and I am stuck here for a couple of days till it gets fixed."

Wife: "Oh, I'm sorry. Are you near a place where they will take care of it?"

Me: "Oh yeah, I'm within walking distance of the BMW Dealership and they seem great."

Wife: "That's great. Where did you say you were?"

Me: "Oh, I'm in Reno"

Wife: "Reno...as in Reno, Nevada?

Me: "Yeah, Reno Nevada."

Wife: "They have an airport, right? You're on the next flight, right? Right?"

Me: "Yes Deeeear"

Exit stage left....kicking little rocks down the street.

There was never a recall on the rear drive failure problem with the first generation K12LTs. BMW would never admit there was a problem. Since its introduction I have not seen a body of evidence that the new GT rear drive has a statistically higher failure rate than any other BMW model.

Glad you made it home safely, Joe! I'll talk to you later and see how things are going. Did the rear tire survive the last day?
Yea...call me at home at your earliest convenience.

Got a new tire in Lincoln, NE. The rear tire just wan't going to make it.

Joe, thank you for visiting the left coast (bastian of socialism)--even though I missed you.

BWM actually added a drain plug and dropped the "maintenance free" crap so that should tell you how bad the problem was/is. This was not an isolated instance. With the revised service recommendations the modified rear may be good as gold at this point, but who knows...
And this rear end is also used on the GT. So I really am warned!
