A 'Sickle Song to give you goosebumps

This leetle ditty about a 1952 Vincent Black Lightning just gives me goose bumps when I hear Reckless Kelly perform it. Granted, it's not about a Brough Superior, one of my all time fav's, but it's none to shabby.

Check out Reckless Kelly doing this song and see if you don't bump up like a set of cat lip's.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hlylarCRayI

ARTIST: Richard Thompson
TITLE: 1952 Vincent Black Lightning

Said Red Molly to James that's a fine motorbike
A girl could feel special on any such like
Said James to Red Molly, well my hat's off to you
It's a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952
And I've seen you at the corners and cafes it seems
Red hair and black leather, my favorite color scheme
And he pulled her on behind
And down to Box Hill they did ride

/ A - - - D - / - - - - A - / : / E - D A /
/ E - D A - / Bm - D - / - - - - A - - - /

Said James to Red Molly, here's a ring for your right hand
But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man
I've fought with the law since I was seventeen
I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine
Now I'm 21 years, I might make 22
And I don't mind dying, but for the love of you
And if fate should break my stride
Then I'll give you my Vincent to ride

Come down, come down, Red Molly, called Sergeant McRae
For they've taken young James Adie for armed robbery
Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside
Oh, come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside
When she came to the hospital, there wasn't much left
He was running out of road, he was running out of breath
But he smiled to see her cry
And said I'll give you my Vincent to ride

Says James, in my opinion, there's nothing in this world
Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl
Now Nortons and Indians and Greeveses won't do
They don't have a soul like a Vincent 52
He reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys
He said I've got no further use for these
I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home
And he gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride

Check out Reckless Kelly doing this song and see if you don't bump up like a set of cat lip's.

Dang it Grif! You know that's my favorite sicklin' song! Although I like Richard's versions better . . . this is going on the iPod as well.

(The upbeat tempo of this version lacks the heart-felt soul of the original...just my stupid opinion.)

Love this song. Thanks for the links gentlemen.

Back in 8th grade we had a BIG snow in Pittsburgh. I called Sue and invited her to a party at my place and asked if she could bring her toboggan. Her Dad told her she better not leave it out front or I might forget to take her along. Well, her Dad's gone, the toboggan was destroyed by her kid brother, and we are rock solid after being married now for 38+ years. Sue's a red head. That red hair with black leather chaps turn heads, especially when she wore it down to her hips. She now has a gold toboggan on one of her bracelets.

Richard's version does kick ass, but Reckless Kelly just gives me the bump's. Richard kind of reminds me of Townes Van Zandt. who wrote Pancho and Lefty. Towne's was one of THE most awesome geetar players. I swear that when he finger picked some of his songs that two notes came out of a string. He played impossible chords (hell, have you seen some of the chord's Willie plays?)

I've always been into psychotic bitches and redheads, often one and the same. I think it was pure luck that I survived my 20's thru mid 30's. Though, I have to admit my current redhead is one of the nicest, decent and kindest human being's I've ever met... till I cross her.

Not bad. Needs to be more relentlessly futile to get my kicker goin' pitter pat.

I was wondering why RT's version appeals to me more and why Griff would like the RK version over it. I think its because RK has made it a country song, while with RT, it seems to have a lot better structure/cohesion for me plus that English guitar work. I'm just waiting for Sandy Denny to come in with background vocals and it would be truely a great bike song.

I have to tell you, Ralph, Richard's version has really grown on me. I keep going back and listening to it. He's a helluva geetar player.
