Bike shopping

Couldn’t add picture so I used it as avatar. Friend of mine is trying sell me his 1996 R 1100 RT he picked up on barter, it’s too tall for him. It has 54,000 miles. Just serviced at BMW dealer, new tires, breaks, windshield, battery, starter etc for $3600.00. Claims it’s road ready. Is $4200.00 a decent buy on this bike? I don’t know much about them, first road bike. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Bike shopping

Don't know where you are located, but around here (SoCal) you can pick up 2005-2006 R1200 RT's for that kind of money. So unless there is something particularly desirable about that model that I don't know about, I would say no, that is not a decent buy for that bike. If your friend picked it up as some kind of trade, I'd offer him his trade value and not anything more if that. Keep in mind, I'm fairly new to RT's, so I could be way wrong here as well.

Re: Bike shopping

I sold my nice, I mean very nice, '96RT with 35,000 miles last summer for $2800. New tires, new brake pads, new steel brake lines, body pristine, TPMS, recently serviced.

Easy enough for you to check this out yourself. Just go to Cycletrader.com and see what guys are asking for their bikes, keeping in mind that the asking price is normally the pie-in-the-sky head-in-the-clouds no-chance-in-hell price. But add a generous amount of salt and you'll have a good idea.

Oh, wait, I can actually do this for you. Let me start my stopwatch and see how long this takes.

OK, took me 80 seconds. There are 21 R1100RT's for sale on cycletrader right now ranging from $1995 to $3999.
