Paid payments to guy who was in the Navy. I was only 16 and everyone thought I was crazy getting a full dress bike. The year was 1974 and went on too ride it too San Fransico - Santa Cruz -Tahoe - Yosemite- Sequoia - San Diego - San Luis Opisbo Talk about a summer of magic. Oh ya my buds with their Triumphs and BSAs just could not hack it for more than a half days ride from here in town.

My 1st bike was a BSA Bantam in 1976. Again, the picture is not of my bike, but very similar.

No picture of my first modern bike, a Suzuki T120 or my gold 72 Honda CB500!

*But this is my first Beemer 73 (R75/5) with Wixom Dustbin fairing with 10 inch headlight with add'l added halogens that would burn paint @ 50 feet away. *I remember flashing drivers on the lonely Laguna Canyon and they would pull over thinking I was an emergency vehicle!! *And first HD, a 1974, "74" Shovel.......45 mph was the sweet spot that would not shake fillings loose!

I have pics of every bike I've ever owned...I think. But unlike you guys, all of my bikes have been manufactured since the advent of the camera!

I'll post a pic later tonight, or tomorrow. It won't be too thrilling. An '84 Honda Magna (700cc).

My First Bike

I do not have very good pictures. Even cameras were not very good then. My first bike was purchased in 1955 and it was a 1949 Harley Davidson. The pictures were taken at Sturgis, SD in 1955. There were four of us that went to Colorado and then to Yellowstone and back through the Black Hills. It just happen to be in August and Sturgis was going on. We did not know anything about it at that time. I have been going out about every since. In the group my bike is the far one.

My first motorcycle was a 1965 Honda Super 90! It was fantastic!

Here are two photos of my early days as a motor cop. '68 HD with side shifter and foot clutch. In B&W, I am second from left.

It's a Silky terrier,close kin to Yorkies I think.
I had to do a little Photoshop magic.
Had my wife hold "Scraps" (da dog) upside down so his ears would look like they were blowing in wind.
Took his picture and cut him out in Photoshop to place on handlebars.
I rode up the street and had my son take picture when I threw my legs out.
Put it all together in Photoshop just for fun.

Believe me if that scooter ever did a wheelie thats what my face would look like.

Unless Bill Patterson replies, I may win the prize for most-recent first-bike purchase: a 2005 Honda GLX600 (whoop-dee-doo ) purchased new August 2005; purchased the LT 3 1/2 weeks later. Yes, I lost some $$ on that deal but I wanted a chance to learn on something before getting a "real" bike.

The bike looked bigger in the show room. As we rolled it out the door I said "Holy cow, this thing is small!".

Ironic...I had the same CB 160 still have the key # T6644 My dad bought it for me used. Mine was red with chrome fenders. Turns out that my dad bought it from the brother of a girl that was a flight attendant with me. We have been friends since middle school and we still are!

Even more ironic is that you and I still have the same bike and even the same color.

Boy, do we have good taste huh?

Best,

Yep, Tony, those WERE the days! And no brakes either! And you stomped on the little foot pedal and the siren shaft rubbed against the rear wheel to make the "si-reen" whail! We all had billiard balls drilled out for shift knobs!

In fact, Howard had the bike for such a short time he doesn't even remember the correct model name. It's a VLX Howie...not a GLX.

Well, I'm not Bill, but I purchased my first bike in September of '05. An '06 Yamaha 400 cc Majesty scooter.

I rode it about a year before trading it in on my LT. Since I'm an old fat guy, my wife says I look like I fit the LT better.

Slightly off topic, but seeing the picture of the police bike with the "suicide shifter," I remember hearing my dad say that he had a motorcycle at one time in his younger days. All I know about it was he described it as "an Indian with a suicide shifter." He also liked to talk about his "40 Ford Coupe with a rumble seat."

1984 Honda Magna

This was the year of the tariff when all 750s were lowered to a 700cc. The '83 V45 Magna was reduced to just being called the Magna in '84. I owned the bike for about 2 months, then sold it to a neighbor and moved up to a V65 (1100cc) Magna. Owned 6 of those before buying my LT in '02.

Talking Small world!

To make things even more ironic gang, the other Bike in this pic is either a 250 or 305 Honda Scrambler, and my first Bike in 1965 was just like that one! It was a Honda 250 scrambler with those high pipes and it was a blast in the hills of Southern California way back when!

Many months ago you you posted a similar post regarding the handshift on a 68 (with out a picture)
I thought you were full of sh... or at the very least confused
because Harley stopped putting the handshift on their bikes by the early 60's going with the hand clutch and the (appropriately named) mousetrap instead.
Only the "hardcore" traditionalists or boulevard "profilers' still used the handshift after that.

The picture is proof that you were right and I was wrong and I apologise for doubting your word and whatever I may have said back then.

Now I'm wondering, there must be some reason why?
all of those Harleys were retrofitted with the handshift footclutch combo,
was there some "tactical" advantage for motor officers that I don't know about,
To me the handshift footclutch seems like a disadvantage?

My first bike was an '88 Yamaha FJ600. Bought it a year old with only 3000 mls on the odo (US import). I had it for about 4 years when I traded it in for a new K75RT (my first BMW).

My students in one of my Autobody classrooms did the work.

I used to beat on that bike something awful and it loved it! I sold it to a guy on Ebay and he wrecked it two weeks later. Shame!

175 Bridgestone

Bought a '66 175 Bridgestone Scrambler in '67 unfortunately no pics. Rode the heck out of it. Then on to Honda's, BSA's, Bonnie's, Harley's, more Honda's, many more Harleys.....

I sold my '66 Bonnie in '04 to a collector for $6,300 (I bought it for $250 in '70with a stuck piston - I had it on the road with a quick hone and rings. I eventually rebuilt the motor. My 1st MX bike was a '71 125 Rickman (I still have this one and a '53 Panhead-mybirth year).

Don't have any photos but here is the assembly drawing my father used to create the 3.5 HP beast. Frame of 2x2 poplar, chain drive, black pipe steering column, plywood front forks etc etc, what a joy.

The color photo is my son's first bike. At 21 yrs old he couldn't care less about motorcycles now, but I tried

This isn't the actual bike (scooter) but I got this in 1963, after a lot of begging. It's a 1958 Cushman Road King, ak alligator. I rode the hell out it for a couple of year on the gravel road of South Dakota. Wish I still had it. I hope the attachment works

Vespa 150 Circa 1962

Purchased in a crate in Pasadena during my H.S. sophomore summer in So Cal! The cost . . . $495.00 plus tax.

Visited the Paiggio Museum in Pontadera (near Pisa) during this summer's tour of Tuscany. This was the color & model that made Vespas famous the world over.

Piaggio also made rail trains, planes, ships & subs but all of that capacity was destroyed during WWII. They rebuilt and put all of their efforts into 2-wheel vehicles. They are now releasing a three-wheeled scooter with a dual front presentation .

The military version with a recoilless canon was commissioned by the French Foreign Legion.
Forty something years later, I graduated thru an R50, K75 & finally to a K1200LTC!

My first licensed MC

This is not a photo of my bike, but rather a brochure photo I snagged from the Internet. Mine was a '69 Suzuki T305 Rebel -- purchased in 1973. It was an abused bike, painted the ugliest brown you can imagine (looked like a turd until I repainted it red) to distract attention away from the dents and scratches. I recall paying $300 for it and only road it to/from high school for one school year. My mother, God rest her sole, worried about my safety so much because of this piece of crap that she to co-sign a loan (against my father's wishes) for a new Suzuki GT550 the following year.

Can't sleep either huh John? BTW how is the clavicle? When are we going to put your LT back together? Let me know. I'll be there.

PS I would like to check out your GS when it's back together. Having watched "long Way 'Round" one too many times I am getting ideas about another BMW...

Nope, can't sleep. I get another round of x-rays next Tuesday. I'll bitch about the pain some other time. See the PM regarding the LT.

I'll do you one better. If my insurance company is o.k. with it, you can take the GS for a day. One benefit of the crash is that the bike is no longer new, so I'm not feeling protective/stingy. I have no idea when I'll get it back. The insurance company just agreed to pay for repairs. I might get a check next week for the P.D.

Regards,
John

Hey I had one of those! Unfortunately, so did Nick Ienatsch, with a little backing from Motorcyclist Magazine.

Wow, a Mini Trail 50 -- cool! I wanted one, but my dad, who nothing about mini bikes, insisted I go with the QA-50. I think the Honda salesman fed him a line of bull in order to unload his inventory.
