BMW Group sets new worldwide sales record in 2006

3.5 percent growth over previous year

Worldwide market leadership of premium segment defended

Detroit/Munich. The BMW Group increased its sales in 2006 by 3.5%. Throughout the world, 1,373,926 automobiles were delivered to customers (prev.yr.: 1,327,992). Sales of the BMW brand, at 1,185,049 vehicles, outstripped the previous year's figure (1,126,768) by 5.2%. Sales of the MINI brand fell by 6.2% to 188,072 deliveries (prev.yr.: 200,428). As already stated, this is due to the building measures in the MINI plant in Oxford aimed at expanding production capacity and the changeover of production to the second generation of MINI. Rolls-Royce Motor Cars handed over 805 Phantoms to customers (prev.yr.: 796/+1.1%). This means that, since the market launch of the Rolls-Royce brand under the umbrella of the BMW Group in 2003, sales have risen for the fourth time in a row.

Dr Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, said today, at the BMW Group's press conference at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS): "These outstanding sales results mean that each of our three brands - BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce - is the market leader in its own segment." Dr Reithofer was also positive about the prospects for BMW Group sales in the future: "We want to continue the BMW Group's success story in 2007. That is to say, we intend to achieve new sales records for every brand."

The top selling BMW Group model series by far is still the BMW 3 Series, in its four variants - saloon, touring, coupé and convertible. In the year under review, sales of the BMW 3 Series rose by 17.1% to 508,498 units (prev.yr.: 434,342). This means that this best-seller accounts for 43% of sales of the BMW brand. Second place, in terms of volume, is taken by the BMW 5 Series, with an increase in sales to 232,162 automobiles (prev.yr.: 228,389/+1.7%). The 1 Series comes in third place, with 151,914 deliveries to customers (prev.yr.: 149,493/+1.6%), followed by the BMW X3 with 113,997 deliveries (prev.yr.: 110,719/+3.0%). Because of the end of the model cycle of the first generation, sales of the BMW X5 in 2006 fell by 25.8% to 75,356 units (prev.yr.: 101,537). In the years before this, the BMW X5 and the X3 had each come right at the top of their segment.

The BMW 7 Series once again confirmed its strong position in the upper automobile category, with 50,199 cars delivered (prev.yr.: 50,062/+0.3%). With sales of 30,974 vehicles (prev.yr.: 28,874), the Z4 is 7.3% over the level of the previous year. 21,942 of the BMW 6 Series were delivered to customers (prev.yr.: 23,340/-6.0%).

In a monthly comparison, sales of the BMW brand in December 2006 shot up by 7.8% compared with the same month last year to reach 114,995 cars delivered (prev.yr.: 106,675).

New MINI causes sales to leap in December

For the reasons described above, the lack of availability of the MINI caused a fall in sales seen over the year. The second generation of the MINI has been available in European markets since 18 November 2006. With the ramping up of production, it will now be much easier to meet the continuing high level of demand for the new MINI too. This has already led to a 39.6% increase in sales to 13,991 units (prev.yr.: 10,020).

2006 was also a great year for BMW motorcycles, with sales reaching 100,064 vehicles. 2.7% more BMW motorcycles were delivered to customers than in the previous year (97,474). In December, 7,419 BMW motorcycles were delivered to customers (prev.yr.: 5,425/+36.8%).

Sorry eljeffe....

But this is just a bunch of "who gives a crap", if you ask me. This is mostly just bragging on the cages...with a tiny snippet thrown in for the bikes. BMW could SIGNIFICANTLY increase their market share in the bike arena IF they'd...

1) Be more customer responsive. (Rear end and ABS issues)
2) Do a better job of marketing. (They keep themselves the best kept secret)
3) Support the customer with DEALERSHIPS.

I live just minutes outside of the forth largest city in Texas...3/4 of a million people...no BMW dealership. My former "local" shop (1.5 hrs away) dropped the Beemer brand cause as the owner put it to me; they "had enough of their $hit". Now the closest BMW shop is 4 hours away. Me and my LT have, in effect, been orphaned by the company. Two new dealers have opened their doors within 15 minutes of my house with in the last 4 months. Both talked to BMW about carrying BMWs and both were told we don't want to be in that market.

I know someone will offer me some cheese to go with my whine/rant. But I know that I am right...and I am living proof that BMW is costing themselves bikes sales. I want the new GT so bad I can't stand it; but I've promised myself I won't buy a bike that I have to ride/trailer for 4 hours (one way) to get worked on (and I do most of my own work). The NEW Yamaha shop would be happy to sell me the NEW FJR they have sitting on the floor.

BTW...I still love my smooth LT...just wish it had ABS at 30K miles.

In our area BMW tried letting the dealerships that sold cars also sell and service their bikes. This turned out to be a terrible idea. The bikes were stuck in the basement and the salespeople knew absolutely nothing about the product because they made almost all of their money selling cars so they were totally indifferent. It would have been nice if this had worked as it would of really increased the places here in Canada where you could get your bike serviced.

From their site, sales per year. I had the splits by country but need to look around more. Interesting how slowly they have grown. Kinda fits and starts.


Global sales results...Motorcycles sold per year: 90,478 (2001), 93,010 (2002), 89,745 (2003), 93,836 (2004), 92,012(2005)

More than 132,000 (recently corrected higher) motorcycle riders have died in traffic crashes since the enactment of the Highway Safety Act of 1966 and The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1966. Be careful out there.

BMW MOTORCYCLE SALES HEAT UP IN 2006
01/12/2007

Woodcliff Lake, NJ - January 11, 2007... There may be a chill in the air, but sales of BMW motorcycles continue to be hot. Worldwide BMW motorcycle sales for December were up 36.8 percent over the same period the previous year, while annual sales topped 100,000 units. BMW Motorrad USA, the importer and distributor of BMW motorcycles in the United States, also posted increases for December as well as annual sales.

The strong performance was due to the introduction of new models as well as the continued performance of existing models. At the head of the list was the top-selling model – the R 1200 RT – which was named “Best Touring Bike” in 2006 for the second year in a row by editors of Motorcyclist Magazine. BMW’s R 1200 GS model – named “Best Adventure Bike” last year by Motorcyclist – accounted for the marque’s second highest volume. The F 650 GS was BMW’s third best-selling bike. The new K 1200 GT, R 1200 GS Adventure, R 1200 S and R 1200 R were highlights of BMW’s on-going product offensive.

Never missing a beat when it comes to bringing new models to market, BMW Motorrad USA will introduce several new motorcycles for 2007 – the G 650 series, the F 800 series, and the K 1200 R Sport models – all of which are expected to contribute to another strong year.
