ATTN Texas riders:State Inspection Change

I went down to get my '06 GT inspected today. It failed. Why? Because according to the dealer (Jap bikes), they can no longer pass any bike that has HID installed aftermarket. Only bikes that come with HID from the manufacturer are allowed now. I installed my HID some 8 or 9 years ago. So I asked when this changed. According to him about 2 yrs ago. Odd, because mine passed last year. Anyone else heard this?

Re: ATTN Texas riders:State Inspection Change

I had my bike pass inspection just last month. Nothing was mentioned about it and I have had the HID done for years.

Re: ATTN Texas riders:State Inspection Change

One time when I had my bike inspected at my local BMW dealer, the Service Manager (Stewart (but I am not mentioning names, LOL)) who performs the inspections said he could fail my bike because of the LED headlight. He was just "showing" me that he has that power. He has always been a ass since working at this dealer. He once told me that he never heard of drive failures on LT's. This was probably around 2004/2006 when they were failing left and right.

When possible I take my bike to my local AAA service center, which is right around the corner, versus 90 miles to the dealer. The inspector there rides a HD and he looks everything over and passes it with no questions. This last time during June, AAA did not charge me for the inspection, something that corporate is starting to do.

I call BS. I had HID's on my '05 RT for five years and always passed inspection.

Re: ATTN Texas riders:State Inspection Change

Here's what I could find on the state website for vehicle inspection criteria.
Sez:
1. Horn
2. Mirror
3. Steering
4. Brakes (system)
5. Tires
6. Wheel Assembly
7. Exhaust System
8. Tail Lamp (1)
9. Stop Lamp (1)
10. License Plate Lamp
11. Rear Red Reflector (1)
12. Head Lamp (1)
13. Motor, Serial, or Vehicle Identification Number

Bill and moi just had our LTs inspected week or so ago - passed at State Inspection Station in Boerne (not MC dealership). Not sure how the inspection dude would know whether we had HID (ole Toad's is 16 years old), or if the scoot came from factory with installed HID.

Re: ATTN Texas riders:State Inspection Change

Doug most Motorcycle dealer will pick the bike apart as they see so many modifications (some not legal for street use) because DPS watches the dealers closely. The local bike shop here would not pass my old CB350 because they said the horn was not loud enough. Thankfully they did not write it up nor did they charge me. I told them I would fix it and rode to my local auto lube center. 10 minutes later the CB was inspected.

Re: ATTN Texas riders:State Inspection Change

I went to a quick oil change place and had it done. They didn't check the brakes or the VIN. I'll never go to a dealer again.
