Talking Got Myself a Little Birthday Present

Today was my birthday (many thanks for all the wishes, you guys rock! ). The ride I was going to take today got shot down by 2 events - Rain and a rather large nail in the back tire of my LT. But, the day wasn't a total loss. While at San Jose BMW getting a new tire (they gave me the mount and balance for free for my birthday, just had to buy the tire, what nice folks!) I spied something that tickled my fancy. They had taken a very clean and well maintained 1995 R1100GS in on trade about a week ago. I saw it last Saturday and someone was working on a deal to buy it. For some reason, though, it wouldn't leave my head. I talked to Kari about it a couple of times, and it came up in conversation at least 3 times at work during the week. This seemed strange because, hey, it was sold, why am I sitting around thinking about it??

Well, apparently the deal fell through last weekend, and it was still there this morning. I talked to Chris and Tim and looked at the numbers (which were very compelling), and they offered to let me take it for a ride for the afternoon. I took the LT tire home and went back with my gear and headed out for a ride. It pulled strong (indicating 120 and still pulling when I got to my exit ), handled great (has Fox shocks front and rear), and, well, just felt like it was supposed to. After running around for a couple of hours and stopping by for Kari to check it out, I went back to the shop and sealed the deal! Here's a couple of pictures of my new plaything.

Happy birthday David.

You will really love this ride. It is by far the best all round bike that has ever been manufactured, IMO. Enjoy!

Happy 29th birthday (again), David!

An outstanding present, if I might say so myself.

Thanks everybody! I'm going for a hike this morning, but plan to come back and spend some quality time in the saddle this afternoon (at least before the rain starts again). One thing I like is how basic it is; no linked power servo zingy brakes (does have ABS, and it works), no heated grips (hand protectors), not even a fuel guage or gear indicator! It's a nice difference from riding the LT. Had some friends over last night and I was showing a buddy's girlfriend the bikes and after one look at the LT cockpit she referred to it as "Mission Control". Don't get me wrong, I'm sure I'll farkle it up a bit (some lights over hear, GPS mount up there, etc.) but I think I kinda like it being more basic (well, as basic as a BMW can be).

Come on out Joe. We're going to try and do the ride next Sunday that got canceled yesterday. We can take turns riding the LT and GS! I have Guinness in the fridge!

When the weather improves you should take a ride up to Mt. Hamilton. Great views when the air is clear. Used to live in Willow Glen multi-eons ago!

Happy birthday, David. That is a very clean bike, especially for 11 or 12 years old.

I know you are going to enjoy the GS, it is probably the perfect universal motorcycle. Of all the BMWs she has seen over the years, my daughter still refers to the GS as a 'cool' bike. With the mountains in our backyards a GS should be required equipment.

Congratulations!

Some people see the gas tank as half empty. Some see it as half full. All I care is that I know where the next tankful is coming from...

It has 41K, mainly commuting with a couple of short trips over it's life. It runs like it's almost new; no rough idle, warms up quickly, pulls like hell, and just scoots right along. I had it indicating 120 at one point and it was still accelerating.

Not yet. I put my name on one the dealer ordered about eight weeks ago. It is has been shipped from Germany and should be here in about 3 weeks.

I REALLY didn't intend to hijack your birthday present thread. I'll talk about mine when it arrives.

Nice sled (nice enough for me to want one), just have to get rid of something or build more storage space. Or get married again Naw I'll waste my money on bikes.

Beautiful! She's not used, her rough edges have just been polished! Impulse buying a new ride--the best way to celebrate another year.

Happy Birthday!
Don't forget to update your biography.
