Update, Thanks, and even an apology...

PART ONE:

Well, when the engine got snapped off it's mounts, it damaged the strut mounts and not only damaged but partially penetrated the firewall of the 530i...even if they wanted to fix it, it would be prohibitively expensive to do so, and if the car were ever in another accident and the firewall came into any question, the liability issues would be incredible, so the decision laid down was "Total it."

I am waiting on yet another branch of the insurance company to evaluate and make me an offer for pay-off, in the mean time I am looking at a 2006 G35 sedan and a Chrysler 300C as the finalists to replace the car (loved the '02 Beemer, but the upkeep was too much, and the family vetoed me getting another one anyway).

Wrist is broken, but not the bone that was dangerous. I undergo cortisone injections on bulging disks in my cervical spine perhaps as soon as this weekend, followed by intensive PT, if that doesn't work I've got some surgery ahead. Thankfully the accident that was MY FAULT resulted in all of $700 in damage to one other vehicle and no physical injury to anyone but me, and I've definitely learned a hard lesson through the process, but when I come home and see my daughters am very grateful to have the opportunity to continue to live and learn (even if that means making more mistakes along the way, once in a while).

PART TWO:

Many many thanks for those of you who expressed concern, well wishes, and sympathy for me, your kindness meant and means the world to me. Thank you.

PART THREE:

Ted, I apologize for my overly-harsh reaction to what I took as a personal attack, this was not the forum to do so (in fact, I was actually violating Forum Guidelines), and responses I posted were neither "turn the other cheek" nor respectful. I don't agree with your opinion, but I respect your right to them and your right to express them although I didn't demonstrate that. I wish you and yours well.

Be safe all...

Pete

Result

Pete

I am glad you got the result you wanted with regard to your car and that bones and everything else seems to be heading in the right direction.

I know what a 330C looks like and I like the look of them - they look like an old Rover - but what is a G35 sedan?

Pete, I hate to see that beautiful BMW totalled. On the brighter side, I think replacing it with a "G" is a great idea. They are great cars and will cost less to maintain and insure than another BMW.

I hope your wrist fully heals also.

Actually, your back and forth with Ted was the most interesting thread I've ever seen in this forum!

Best wishes to you!

Pete - apology accepted. I never meant for my initial post to take us where it did.

When I was 17 (1975), while driving my parent's car, I came to a T intersection on the road into town that I had literally travelled every day of my 17 years. I knew this road! This time, however, the cigarette lighter popped just as I stopped. I reached for the lighter, lowered my head to light the cig, stepped on the gas as I turned left, but instead of turning the required 90 degrees I turned approx 80 - and drove right into a 7-8 foot diameter oak tree. Car hit near the right headlight and hit with enough force to break the windshield on the lower right hand corner. Frame was torqued so bad insurance company had to total the car. Was only wearing a seatbelt (shoulder strap was tucked neatly in its holder above the door) so my mouth hit the steering wheel, knocked out a permanent lower tooth and split my chin leaving a 1" scar.

Learned 2 things that day - try not to hit a tree (aside from a little bark missing - the tree was unscathed), and never ever take your eyes off the road. I know this little mishap has probably saved me and others from injury or worse countless times since.

One question for the moderators - who gets charged for locking the thread?!
Not that I'm counting - this could be my first, but I think Meese holds the record....

Pete - I sincerely mean this - heal fast, and I do hope and pray that your luck and health improves.

I don't think I've ever had a thread locked. Possibly a few Ignores, but that's expected when one isn't afraid to speak his mind. Besides, I'd say Joe's got me beat on both counts.

Glad to see you guys come to a fair agreement. This site is still well above many others in terms of overall maturity and the occasional agreement to disagree.

No one gets 'charged' with having the thread closed. We have rarely closed one, but when it happens it is in response to the general tone of the entire thread, rather than any particular participant. When we do close a thread it is discussed and agreed upon by a consensus of the moderators.
