Check out this vw factory

Check this out http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1837641

I like to think our beloved BMWs are assembled in such a facility.

Those crafty Germans.....

Wow! Thanks for the post, that is a very impressive factory - never even heard of a Phaeton before. The V8 starts at $66K, want the W12? The price of admission jumps up to $97K !

I have heard of the car, but had no idea it is that expensive!!! OUCH!!!!

It certainly is different than looking out my window here onto the shop floor where we manufacture signs and stuff. Concrete, dirt, dust. Crap piled everywhere. Not sure how and why crap piles up, but it does. Nothing liket hat facility. we do havea chain hoist though..... : )

Two years ago before I bought a VW Passat I asked the salesman about the Phaeton they had on the showroom floor (knowing full well it was crazy-expensive, but I was curious what it was like). He insisted we take it out for a test drive, knowing full well we weren't going to buy it (I even said it that bluntly). He was just anxious to get customers into it.

OMG. That was, and probably will be, the nicest car I've ever driven. It was the 12-cylinder model. Smooth, powerful, luxurious, and a work of art. Untold layers of luscious black paint and finish. Creature comforts that defy the imagination. Worth every penny of the $100K + MSRP.

Kind of reminds of the LT...

The Phateon is VW Group's move to take some sales from Mercedes (think S Class). VW is trying to target the Audi line at BMW and the VW line at MB. The Porsche line really has no competition...

The W12 engine is built from two V6 VW-engines, which on itself already are powerful engines. I've got one in my VW Sharan (7 seats family van).

VW discontinued the Phaeton. Fantastic car but wrong branding. No one is willing to be caught dead dropping $80K+ for a Volkswagen. They should've just stuck it in the Bentley line-up and they might have sold more.

It was a dreamwork by the former CEO Ferdinand Piëch who wanted to elevate the cache of the VW marque and its holdings. He also commisioned the Bugatti Veyron W16, most powerful production car (1,000+ HP).

Yeah "Folks Wagon" or "peoples Car" doesn't really work at that price....

I can agree with that statement. We have had a couple of the Phaeton's I must say they are fabulous for the "Stealth Wealth" groups. but a lot of folks just could not accept the price with the label.
Driving it is truly a dream. You cannot lay rubber, yet you can go way fast. One cool thing is that you have TWO batteries that keep that car running (something I wish you could get on a bike). One for the engine and one for the "goodies."
Graham followed me up to Hyder, AK on my 3 country 49 state ride in one that was a real hit with the riders up there. ( Course that could be cause the ice chest was always full of cool beverages too!)
Note that they are no longer being delivered to the USA...yet everywhere else is still selling them!!!
So...if you still want one let me know we see lightly used ones for sale every once in a while.

Grif,

The last two that we purchased for customers were really not bad on the wallet.

One we sold for $37K it had 20K miles and reclining heated/air conditioned rear seats with massage, blinds etc.

The other was $30K. We had a client that wanted it even knowing that it was a lemon-law- buy-back. We would never buy that car without a confirmed order. Pinch protection was replaced in the driver’s window and the car was perfect...yet it does have a branded title. Thus making it harder to sell, unless you have a car-savvy buyer.

Risks and Rewards!

Call me crazy, but -- having driven the Phaeton -- I wouldn't balk at owning one (at full price) and having the VW badge on it. It's such a delicious car you could put a Yugo hood ornament on it and I wouldn't mind... much!Buying one for $27k or $30k? Wow.

I wasn't aware of VW only closing it out of the US market. The LA Times ran an article a while back about the Phaeton's sales demise. It didn't mention just being a US cut-back. Figures. Here in Southern California, with it's snotty car culture: if you can't buy a particular car here, it must not exist.

Wow - how old was it? Is is possible the Phaeton depreciates more on a % basis than our beloved LT's??
