Unhappy Nasty get-off/rough months ahead

A few weeks ago, riding home from work, I entered an intersection (on a green light) a few blocks from home at 30 MPH. Normally, I’m religious about scanning all angles of intersections for potential problems. In this case, however, I must have been thinking more of getting home to Cheri and our pups; I did not see the SUV coming the opposite direction when it (illegally) turned left directly in front of me. I just suddenly saw the front quarter-panel, thought “Oh, crap” and POW – hit him right behind the front window. Like hitting a brick wall at 30 MPH. My weight was apparently first driven into my GTL’s gas tank, and then I went over the windshield and into the SUV itself.

The Bad:
- My pelvis is broken in multiple places – lots of screws/plates now holding it in place (more surgeries to come), and I’m restricted to a rehab hospital for a few months while it all fuses back together;
- My left knee is trashed – 3 of the 4 major ligaments (surgery to replace with plates/screws will occur in a month or so);
- Internal bleeding and clotting in crotch (hematoma the size of cantelope) – very painful, but is subsiding now ("only" size of apple now);
- Fractured left wrist and hand (unsure if will require surgery or not – might just keep brace on it and let it heal);
- I won’t be allowed to even attempt to stand or walk for 2-3 months (until my pelvis fuses to the plates and screws and is able to handle stress);
- Cheri was so freaked out by this incident that we have agreed not to ride bikes for the foreseeable future (my GTL looks totaled, and we’ll be selling her Vespa 300).

The Good:
- I have MUCH for which to be thankful!
- I survived (the surgeon said if I was going 5-15 MPH faster, I likely wouldn’t have);
- Somehow, Y3K (my pre-owned kidney) was unaffected/unscathed, a HUGE positive;
- My helmet protected my head/face/brain;
- After a few months of rehab/surgery, it looks like I should be largely back to “normal” some time this fall, with just residual aches and pains. Not everyone can say that after accidents. J
- Cheri and I should still be able to do most of the things we want to, including travel (and, I believe, my underwater photography). One thing I have a renewed appreciation for is just spending time at home with Cheri in our home and yard.

Lastly, to all of you--friends and others--remember to be ever-vigilant when riding. I was for 45 years, and only let up for one moment...

And cherish every day; life can change in the blink of an eye.

Wow Bruce! So sorry to hear of this! But you did survive, so there is an upside to the tragedy. Hope the idiot who never saw you is paying big time!!!

Heal, slowly if needed, and do not try to rush it! And listen to your Dr's advise!

Just stunned by this Bruce but so thankful you are alive. Jessica and I will be saying prayers for you and certainly keeping your words about riding safe in our thoughts when we are on the road.

We are heading to Indonesia in November on the Damai and yesterday we got news that someone from the trip cancelled so I was thinking about sending you a message to see if you might want their cabin. Can you use salt water for the healing process in November

All the best you to you!

Bruce, sorry to hear about the accident and I hope the healing goes well. Good description of what happened and regardless of what some people believe, I'm glad you had a helmet on.

I hope this never happens to me because if I'm not killed in the accident, my RN wife will when she gets her hands on me!

Best wishes for a full recovery.

Roads are clearly getting more crowded and cagers can't see anything they think can't hurt them.

We lost 5 motorcyclists on Alberta roads last weekend.

Bruce - Unbelievable positive attitude, wish you all the best in your recovery,
understand your position on riding and all the best to your loved ones and
family as they see you through this mending process . . .

Once again, your unfortunate situation and others on this board in similar
circumstances continues to alter the way I ride and my outlook as I motor down
the road.

Keep us abreast of your recovery . . .

Re: Nasty get-off/rough months ahead

I'm sorry to here about your injuries Bruce, I also had my first crash at 30 mph a few weeks ago after 45 years of riding.

I was lucky & didn't need any medical treatment. It took about three weeks before I was not sore. I am much more aware of my surroundings in traffic now than I was a few weeks ago. I think after all of the years of riding I wasn't paying attention like I should have been.

Bruce, I'm wishing you a speedy recovery and lots of South Pacific dives in the future. Thanks for the report and I'm sure that others will benefit from it. I too have gotten complacent occasionally, but need to remember to be EXTRA cautious near intersections and any place when someone can pull out in front.

I love your photography and look forward to more great shots in the future. Take care and take the pain meds..... The definitely help with the rehab...

Wow, I'm sorry that happened to you, Bruce. Glad to hear that kidney is still chugging away. Do what the Dr. says and what Attila the Physical Therapist says when it comes time. That made me smile, Scott. It doesn't get better than Indonesia diving. Have a great time, but I doubt I'll be ready for diving until next year, when Cheri and I hope to go to Philippines as volunteers with a children's charity...and a little diving as well.

Bruce, I'm so sorry to hear to hear this happened to you, yet I'm impressed and more than just a little inspired by your positive outlook after all that has happened. Best wishes to you and Mrs. Y3K for everything in your future.

Speaking of CCR: isn't there an award of some kind for someone who has a motorcycle-related incident and speaks about it at CCR? "Dark Rider", "Pale Rider", or something like that...? Maybe that's an incentive for attending CCR 2016.

Take care!

Re: Nasty get-off/rough months ahead

Life (and healing) doesn't always progress in straight lines. 😬

It's been a few weeks since I posted re my accident. At that time, I seemed to be making faster progress than anybody expected, I was able sit in a wheelchair, and my pelvis seemed well on its way to healing. Unfortunately, X-Rays showed the opposite. The screws and plates had failed (torn loose from the bone), requiring more complex surgery.

It was a very discouraging setback.

So it was back to ICU for 8 days, and two more surgeries. I now have an external metallic framework that is wired through my abdomen holding said pelvis together. This exoskeleton jabs and pinches my thighs, and I can't even sit up, let alone hope to sit in a chair/wheelchair-- for at least 7-11 more weeks. It's uncomfortable, and really requires just enduring each hour and each day. My goal is to be on my feet with a solid pelvis sometime in September, and able to get down to serious rehab and physical therapy by the time the Seahawks season starts. 😎

Thankfully, Cheri has been amazing this whole time, and she helps me keep it all in perspective. It's a heavy load for her to bear, but I don't know how I'd make it without her. 💕

One thing is for sure; I wasted that money getting pre-approved for TSA "Pre-check" early boarding. With the amount of metal I'll be "wearing" (in my pelvis and knee), there's no way I'll be getting expedited boarding again anytime soon. 😉

Thanks again for all of the encouraging words, thoughts and prayers. Keep 'em coming! 👍

Bruce,

I'm a bit late to respond, but I am so sorry to hear about your mishap.

Thank goodness you are going to fully recover.

Since I am a local Bellevue boy myself, where'd this happen?

Really makes me think twice about riding!

I sincerely hope you fully recover and it is expedient!

Re: Nasty get-off/rough months ahead

Bruce,

I am so sorry for the setback. It's the ones around us that really make a difference during the recovery. "My" injury was 15 years ago and after 6 months in bed and no weight on my left foot, I started with water therapy.

Just walking in a pool for hours really made a positive difference and I did miles and miles back and forth. My guess is that you will also have the opportunity. It was never suggested by any of my rehab people, but something I started and it cut down on the pain by being semi weightless. If they don't recommend it, ask.

I hope you are able to get out of bed as quickly as possible and get back underwater.

Can't argue with the assessment of drivers, but I really think it's a matter of realizing that city riding carries more risk of bad interactions with cages, and therefore requires that much more hyper-awareness of dangers on every side. And never let your guard down, even at a green light in a residential area...

Exact location: intersection of 84th (the long street separating Clyde Hill and Medina) and 24th (which goes up over Clyde Hill).
