Farkle! It's official.

Look what I found!

An "official" meaning for FARKLE in an Encyclopedia (of sorts)

Great find. But the small print says: "This motorcycle, scooter, or moped-related article is a stub. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it." I figure one uploaded pix of the latest farkle of each member of this forum, with accompanying description, would expand it a tad.

The next step is to get it accepted as a verb, as in: "I think I'll farkel the bike up a little today." (It worked for Google!)

Well someone should write and tell them they got it a tad wrong anyway.
No-one would say "The completed motorcycle would be all "farkled up". "
Instead they would say - The completed motorcycle would be farklized.

I don't consider Wikipedia to be a real source of information. Anything where the general public has the ability to edit the information is just wrong...

That's why you will sometimes see some very "interesting" items there..

Then you must not know how Webster comes up with the definitions of words.

OED, all the way!

I guess I should qualify my earlier statement. There is a difference between a reference book changing a definition after an established and significant change in the usage of a word and an online "encyclopedia" that relys completely on the public for its content with no real filtering in place. Heck, I could go to that entry and edit it to show your dislike of the word.

I agree, like Joe said - Amaggs. In a sentence "just put some serious amaggs on my bike" or "that new amagg cost me a small fortune"!

I would rather be riding my bike and thinking about God than sitting in Church thinking about my bike!

Refusing to use a word, you feel a leetle better about, cause it sounds faggy sounds faggy to me.

We use CLAP (Chrome, Leather, Accessories, and Power) on one of the other worlds I visit. Of course that would mean you have to find a place to hang some chrome on the LT. Joe, you have any objection to giving your bike CLAP?

Time for a poll? If "farkle" sounds like a Barbie Doll accessory, you have to go with the acronym Amagg. Sounds more butch! Ghey is so farkle in pink! Waddya think?

What difference does it make? Man, woman, homosexual, lesbian, vegetarian, vegan, bible basher, born again, who cares. Farkle is just a word, not a statement about your sexuality. get over it. We all ride bikes, we all buy bits for our bikes. I HATE bigotry.

Just a bit further to go....

We've come a long way as a society.
-It wasn't long ago that people with severe physical defects could only get good paying jobs in "Freak Shows".
-That based on race, it was okay to make "Coloreds" pick up food at the service door behind the restuarant.
-That a whole country set about supporting and was complicent with a governement policy that resulted in the murder of 6 million based on their religion.

But, from the comments in this thread, it looks like it's still acceptable to publicly mock and debase people based on their sexual orientation. Which of course give those that are prone to violence a sense that if they direct that violence toward Gays that it's okay, aka Gay Bashing.

I guess we still have a ways to go yet.

But we're working on it. And calling people on using hurtful slang as a matter of course is part of that. They may not agree, or change their stance, but at least the point is made rather than being allowed to pass without comment. Change is slow, but it can happen.

I agree. Lots of people don't seem to think of the potential upset they might cause.

"come on lads, it's only a bit of fun. Just because we insinuate that you are ............... (fill in the gap however you like) doesn't mean that we have anything against them. Some of them are OK i suppose. Hell, my mate knows one, and says he is not too bad " etc, etc, etc.

It's easy to say things without thinking, and using this slang as a matter of habit makes the whole thing worse. I'm not overtly politically correct, or overly sensitive, and I don't think I take things too seriously. I'm just a normal guy who wants to live in a world where people respect each others differences instead of using the differences as excuses to set people apart.

Diversity strengthens a society, bigotry destroys it.

Sorry Joe, I hope thats not too heavy. I'll try to leave it at that.

I disagree, grif. The whole point of the reference is to put something down, by comparing it with something else that is a known put down. If the word had no power, then there wouldn't be a reason to use it in the first place.

I'm not overly PC either, and I'll make elevator jokes with the best of them, but I also know that you tend to play along with such things and don't take offense. And we never specify what it is about the elevator, so it remains an inside joke that doesn't attack anyone specifically. I'm perfectly comfortable in my own skin, as I know you are. I just wish others were, at least to the point where the didn't feel it necessary to put someone else down just to make them feel a bit better. It never really works anyway.

I don't know, man. Queer is also a huge put down, but you have that popular tv show, I've seen it once, and man oh man, I just don't know. The kid's walk around saying stuff is, "gay", and don't consider it a put down. I'm friends with a few gay guys and they take no offense to me calling them faggots. Kinda like the black folks calling each other that inflammatory word that I refuse to use.

I do get your point though, Obleo.

I reckon it all boils down to being able to say what's written to someone's face. What I write, I'll say. I also love to kid around and it's real hard to offend me. Thick skinned, or just downright dense?

Just like a fist planted square on the tip of the nose, some folks don't understand nada but having their tail put firmly twixt their legs. Sledge hammer subtlety, as it may be. For me, it's all in good fun, and once again, if I type it, I'll say it to your face. Beeg difference there as some folks hide behind a keyboard and if you call them mano y mano, they crawfish. Plus, sometimes the written word doesn't quite carry the full intent, i.e. body language, facial expression, etc. What might come off harsh is softened by a smiley emoticon. Just like here in the south, where you can insult the goat snot out of someone as long as you start it with, "Why, bless your heart... (insert phrase of your choice) .... you've gotten fat as a blighted horse.

It's slightly different when the target group adopts the slang for their own use. Honestly, I think they do it on purpose. Rather than fight every close-minded bigot, just take the hurt out of the words by assimilating them and using them as friendly banter. Before you know it, those same words become terms of endearment inside the community, so any outside attacks just don't have the same sting anymore. It's not always brute force that wins the day.

Grif, the jets are cool, actually never warmed up . I don't believe that those that say things hurtful to others are doing so with intent, it's just that they MAY not know any better .

My own son has used the epithet. "that's Gay", innocently enough, and a calm discussion ensued resulting in that derogatory reference abandoned.

Regarding words not equalling the action, agreed Grif, but then, I did not say that saying something was Gay Bashing.

What, in essence, I did say was this: When WE allow our society to "debase" and "mock" a group within our society, an environment is developed in which violence is made MORE LIKELY than if we had spoken out against the speech in the first place.

This board has 10,000 members. If we use a rough percentage of people that consider themselves more attracted to the same sex, which may be about 5%, then that would mean somewhere around 500 of our co-members may be in that group.

Just because they don't speak up (come out of the closet) doesn't give us license to mock them. I cannot imagine what it must be like for one of our fellow board members to have to read, or stand face to face with co-members of this board while they are being publicly ridiculed because they are afraid to speak out for fear of OTHER consequences possible in our society.

Nuff said!

How did a light hearted thread discussing the merits of the word farkle end up so totally off the subject and nearly starting WW3? Now, getting back to the word "farkle"...............Get rid of it - it sounds too...............(fill in the blank but don't tell anyone) What a lot of BS!!!

I would rather be riding my bike and thinking about God than sitting in Church thinking about my bike!

"What an idiotic word."

Well, I learned something new! I thought it was just something my budy did on the fender of the Ford.

target, walmart, bah. Now, Home Depot, Ace Hardware, etc.!!!!! When we were at Munson's Munster Gearage tech session last weekend, El Jeffe called Sandar the mag and asked her if I could go to Auto Zone with him. She said yes, of course, but instructed him to take away my credit/debit cards and leave me with 20 bucks. Now, that my friend, is a target group.

I only wish I had calm discussions with my parental units. It usually started with a shouting match, I got my ass kicked and then had to go build free stack rock walls. I took my son in law by the old place several months ago. His comment was, "You got in trouble a lot, didn't you/"
