When I saw it I thought it was a April fools joke, I have been proven wrong in the past so it may not be.

Interesting for sure. Weird too! My first thoughts are how can they control heat, back cylinder power loss and emissions in an air cooled V3? Engine production cost has to be at least 50% greater than V twin. Wouldn't a water cooled strait 3 or 4 make infinitely more sense?

Re: Alleged BMW W3 Is it a joke?

I was chatting with the new GM at the local shop and he mentioned that BMW was going to really expand its line in the next few years, offering different bikes in different segments to compete with the Japanese and American makers. He made it sound like BMW was going to offer everything from little 300cc Ninja-type street bikes up to larger displacement cruisers. I'm not sure if I believe him or not, but stuff like this article just adds to the speculation.

I was at a model introduction evening put on by our dealer and he had just returned from Portugal from the official BMW dealer meeting and he said that BMW is aiming to sell 200,000 bikes a year by 2020, a large part of that growth is expected in China where models with small displacement will be offered and he did not expect them to be part of the mix on this side of the pond.

Honda just passed 300 million in cumulative sales of motorcycles. I think they now sell 5 to 10 million a year. Go BMW!

Same problems with the joke that is a 45-degree V-twin

I've never been into quantity. My experience is that while quality may cost more up front it tends to last longer and, therefore, cost less in the end. While my remark may run contrary to recent threads concerning Consumer Reports reviews, that is my experience. I hope BWM doesn't drop the ball on this one.

I think the Honda 100 is the most popular bike in the world. The Japanese guys sell lots of bike in Asia, all very small engine displacement and very low price. I have a friend with a 1985 Honda Shadow 1100. 150,000 miles and has never had a major problem.
