Question "saran wrap" like touch screen

Went to the bike this morning, and the touch screen on the NAV II looked like loose saran wrap. of course, it is 12 months, and 13 days old.....I removed it from the bike, and put it in the house. It has not seen any rain lately, but the humidity has been high for 3 weeks. Any smart words?? the unit apparently still works, as it synched right up. no tears or scratches on the screen.

Mark, it might lay back down, but I would contact the manufacturer. Garmin would probably want to fix it...

Best wishes...

I have heard that Garmin is good about just-outta-warranty failures. Good luck.

Is it possible that it has an extra protective film on the touch screen? I have absolutely no clue about these things, but we have a big digital printer here at work that had an extra membrane over the touch pad that we left on for years indoors and it was similar to what you have just said.

just a thought....

First, if it's a NAV II purchased with the bike it will be covered by the BMW warranty for the bike (3/36), not Garmin. So your BMW dealer is who you want to talk to. Second, I've heard a couple of cases where the touch screen has delaminated on the 26xx/27xx series Garmin units. It's rare but it has happened. In each case Garmin corrected the situation quickly at their cost, regardless of warranty. I'm sure BMW will do the same.

When I bought the bike, they didnt have any GPS units available, and i was quoted 3-4 weeks. I purchased it the next spring when I took the bike out of storage, from them, and they installed it. so, i may just have the 12 month warranty. I just called the dealership, and they are looking into it, and will let me know.

That was probably just the protective shipping membrane. Just about anything with a screen has one of those on it to protect the screen until the purchaser has the unit in his hands. I know my Garmin StreetPilot had one.

The exact same thing happened to my 2610 and Garmin replaced it. Mine bubbled up while I was on a trip, then that afternoon most of it just blew off. I got some of those protector sheets for PDA's and put it on, to protect the touch-screen. If they hadn't replaced it I was going to just keep a protector sheet on it, they worked fine. I called Garmin they just had me send it in and they replaced it.

Will it peel off separate from the actual face of the unit? If so, that's most likely what it is, as others said too. Maybe. That would be better than having to ship it off and deal with all that.

G' luck

The one that peeled off of mine was not the protective film that it shipped with, this was not supposed to come off. The touch screen still worked, so I put on a cut to fit protective film, until I could finish my trip. It worked fine for about 3 weeks until I sent it back to Garmin.

There are some other threads about this problem

no, it is under the rim of the screen. I looked at it again, and it does not appear to be a safety membrane, rather the actual coating over the touch screen.

This sounds like mine on several others, after mine bubbled up like that it just broke apart a flew off. Call Garmin, they were very quick about replacing mine. If they won't then the protective sheets that are sold for palm pilots will fit to protect the screen, the touch screen will still work fine.

returned within 10 days, at no cost, got a free fireware upgrade, and the screen seems much clearer that before. the touch screen seems a little more shiny as well.

My 2610 delaminated 1/4 way thru a 10,000 km ride. phoned Garmin when I got back, he wanted to charge me $225 to fix it. Finnally said that they would fix it under warrenty. I registered it in Feb 05 so it was long past the 1 year. Waiting for the email confirmation that I send with it to the repair shop here in Canada so it won't cost me. He said the film is part of the system that keeps the 2610 waterproof. He would not suggest using it in bad weather, Well 7,500 km to finish the trip I wasn't going to shut it off. It lasted thru the rain and heat of AZ and TX.
