Battery Charger

I had an 05RT I maintained the battery with the BMW charger # 71 60 7 688 865 during the winter months. I now have an 09LT. Can I use the same charger or do I have to use a traditional battery charger / tender.

It should work just fine on the LT too. Plug it in and if you get the solid red charge light you're good to go.

NOTE: You need to use the socket near the shifter. The powerlet on the truck is switched with the ignition and won't charge the battery.

Re: Battery Charger

I just purchased an '03 LT and it came with a Battery Tender. I've always kept the battery charged by riding almost every day. I'm thinking that the charger only needs to be used if the bike sits for an extended period of time - like two or three months in the winter - but in Dallas, it rarely sits for more than 3 or 4 days. Other bikes have sat for a week or two while on vacation and cranked up just fine when I got home. Is there something about the LT that requires more frequent use of the charger? I guess the short version of my question is: When do I need to use the charger?

Thanks.

Re: Battery Charger

Unless you have some parisitic drain from a malfunction in the radio(search the Technical article section) - never.

I have made it over 5 years on the OEM battery and never used a tender. I did have a couple of almost didn't start when I got back from a 6 week TDY stint. But other than that I rode enough to keep it up. I did start using a tender this year on both the LT (just installed a new Odyssey) and the GS as I am not riding as much as I used to. It can't hurt.

Yes the LT uses more current just sitting than other bikes do. The alarm for instance is a constant drian. I can go two or three weeks, then it needs the charger. My bike is put to bed for a long winter's nap connected to the BMW gel tender.

Re: Battery Charger

Thank you, Michael.

I hadn't thought about the alarm. In fact, I haven't used it yet because I just read the instructions. I will start using it today. Is there any problem with it being too sensitive? I hate it when someone's car alarm keeps going off repeatedly because of a gusty wind or a Harley riding by. I am a college professor and my parking space is right outside a classroom. I probably won't have the alarm on while the bike is in my garage.

I will use the Tender if the bike is going to set for a week or more. If I understand what you were saying, that seems reasonable.

Thanks again.

Re: Battery Charger

FWIW the steady state parasitic drain on my 05 was only 5.7 milliamps with the bars locked and key out.
