Will this charger work on my LT?

Would it hurt anything to leave this on the battery of my LT and just plug it into an extension cord every night?

Dang, it doesn't look like that pasted as a link.

Thanks,
Dave

Well, it should be fine if you do not have a GEL battery, and even then it might. The GEL batteries need a special charger (according to the experts).

I have a GEL battery on my GT and have been using a "regluar" battery tender for about a year and it seems to be working fine. I figured I would try it and see and if it didn't work, I'd replace the battery. But..this is a TEST...this is only a TEST...I cannot yet recommend it to you

Dave it SHOULD work but.... From the looks of that one you'll have to mount the charger on the bike, Or cut the leads and put in a quick disconnect in line. If it was me I would go with something like THIS. It is what I use.

Dave,

Never forget that you'll get exactly what you pay. I can't think of a good place to mount that unit that wouldn't get in the way of something under the seat and I don't think I'd want that under my seat in case it decides to heat up while charging. I'd strongly recommend you look at a Deltran charger. Great units, small size, very reliable. Get the right one for your battery as mentioned. If you don't have a gel battery you can share the charger between the bike, car, and even a lawn tractor if you have one.

Battery choices:

GEL battery
AGM battery
Flooded Cell
Dry Cell

are all of these mutually exclusive or are some subsets of others?

Re: Will this charger work on my LT?

Those all excellent tips. I never really thought about catching my butt on fire but I guess that is a possibility with the charger mounted under the seat. I think I will follow your lead Steve.

Thanks,
Dave

I ran across this thread looking for battery recommendations because mine died between Friday & Saturday. I ended up with a AGM, best balance of economy & reliability IMHO. Anyway, Flooded Cell, AGM & GEL are related. AGM uses same electrolyte (+/-) but with fiberglass mat between plates which greatly enhances shock & vibe resistance and almost eliminates evaporation, plus it is sealed to avoid spills. GEL goes the extra step of using an advanced electrolyte that is very resistant to flow or evaporation. The only drawback is the GEL is susceptible to breakdown due to overcharging. I'm not sure about Dry Cell. I think it is still lead based but not sure.

On chargers, I have one each Deltran "Battery Tender Jr." $30 and "Battery Tender Plus" $60. Both are excellent and are rated for use with GEL batteries. The new "Battery Tender Waterproof 800" $50 looks cool and I would opt for it instead of Jr. I would not use a non-GEL rated charger with a GEL battery. It might work OK, but why take the chance? If you have $80 burning a hole in your pocket and you want to stimulate the economy, the BMW charger (made by Deltran) is your answer. The BMW ACC adapter $15 fits the models above and is my connector of choice.

Hope this helps.

If you really want the Harbor Freight model that is close to the Deltran, this is it: Harbor Freight Tender I prefer the Deltran models myself, but I know others that use the HF one without any problems. This one is cheaper than the one you were looking at too.
