My LT is all but a write off

Just over a month ago I was hit by a car that went through a stop sign. Lucky for me it was a low speed crash, as I ended up on the opposite side of the road along with my bike, in oncoming trafic.
I was carted off to hospital whith some bark off and a few broken ribs. My LT didnt fair so well, as of the other day the damage quote was $16600, the bike insured for $19000. Now you would think that would be the end of it..a write off. Well after a month of stuffing me around the insurance company wont accept the quote, they now want to start the whole proccess again wanting to know what can be repaired.

They dont seem to care that this is my only form of transport...The only positive is they sent me a cheque for a new helmet.

Regards Macca

i had the same thing happen to me. A pickup swerved into me, 2000 miles from home. Insurance company wanted it repaired at a local shop, not a BMW dealer. They would not get me home either, as I did not have travel insurance on the policy.

I asked if they would rent a truck so I could drive it home myself, and got the OK for that. I rented a truck, got the bike loaded, and drove 2000 miles with my left arm in a cast. Fun trip.

When I got home, my dealer gave the insurance company an estimate, but upon removing the Tupperware found three of the four frame tabs broken, so called the insurance adjuster back out expecting them total it. Adjuster said to fix it!

So, about 4 weeks and $16,000 later, I got a practically new bike back. New frame, all of the front fairings, windshield, one new side case, handlebars and covers, antenna, front forks, front wheel, one radiator, horn, and a few other things. Fortunately the bike looked and rode like new, never had one issue with the repairs, rode it nearly 100,000 miles after all that.. Dealer's shop was GOOD. They replace anything that even had a hint of possible damage. They got a new topcase top, but since the original only had one small scratch, I just got the new one and kept it. (still have it, with no bike to put it on)

I don't want to achieve immortality through my work...I want to achieve it through not dying.

Re: My LT is all but a write off

Ive got my eye on a 2007 LT with only 29500km on it, great condition new tyres and 12 mths Rego on it. Now all I have to do is get the insurance company to write mine off.

Re: My LT is all but a write off

Insure my ride are thones stuffing me around. The wouldnt accept the quote that the BMW shop at Ballina did, they wanted to se what could be repaired insted of being replaced.

First quote was for 17k, the second quote came in today at just under 13k...so its anyones guess what they will do.

Re: My LT is all but a write off

Gday all, Well as yot I still have not got the LT back and its 3 mths to the day. Bloody Insurance company is the worst and most inept that Ive ever had to deal with. First quote for repair was 17k and they knocked that back, requote for fix and replace parts was 13k.

Still refused to write it off even tho it was only insured for 19k. So since then Ive been waiting for parts to arrive or be repaired.

The kicker came when I recieved my Insurance renewal for the coming year, My Premium had gone thru the roof to the tune of and extra $200 and they had removed my no claim bonus! And the accident wasnt my fault!!. When I qustioned them about this they tried to tell me that because I hadnt provided the other drivers details (I was in he back of an Ambulance) i was concidered at fault. Despite having provided them with the Police event number that allowed them to get the details.

So to date they still want me to pay the excess (good luck with that). Hope to get the bike this week but I wont hold my breath..waiting on a Mirror.

The moral to this story is, DONT insure with INSURE MY RIDE!!!

Re: My LT is all but a write off

Damned frustrating ! You ride along paying attention and get cleaned up by some cock doing the wrong thing, then the insurance crowd want to do you on a stupid technicality. They never seem to hesitate to take your money for the premium each year, funny that. Publish their name, as you have done, because it's all 1 way with them ! Get a lawyer with some mongrel in him and give 'em a go, you may be surprised at the result. Not small $$ at stake here. Hope it works out for you, Dennis. By the way, I use New England Insurance Brokers for my K12. Hope I never have a claim, but in the event of needing to, well, we'll see, though I've heard only good things from some others.

Macca, which mirror do you need? I have a left side mirror left over as I only needed the right one out of the pair I bought.

Sir,

You need to say three words to your insurance company...

Lawyer...

Bad Faith....

These three simple words will get them off their ass...

Or a gun to the head... You're in Aus... You can do that can't you ?

Hi from a damp and wet Sydney....nice fun an games riding home from Eastern Creek last night..
I have always used New England since buying Beryl new back in '99. A couple of dings due to cage drivers either rolling into the back of me on a slight incline whilst I was stopped in the congo line traffic jam coming home from the city one evening, or the ding-a-ling plumber that knocked Beryl over whilst I was at the tennis courts. No problem whatever with getting Beryl fixed via NEIB, as I had all details, so +1 so far.

Pulled up at the petrol station on the M4 yesterday morning, and about 30 secs later a police motorcyclist pulled up at the other side of the same fuel pump I was using.... hmmmm couldn't have been that far behind me on the M4, and as usual I was being held up by the flipheads cruising along in the far RHS lane...(mutter mutter grumble)...ok....we are both there sticking our nozzles in...both fill up, and then walk into pay..so I turned around to say
"Good morning", plus
"the weather forecast doesn't look that too crash hot for bikes later on in the day"....just general chit chat...
and the guy looked down through his helmet, (why don't they have to remove their helmets going in to pay I wonder?? ) and said
"any day is a good day for a bike".....
yeah right......as I looked out the window at work later in the day at the torential rains and winds, I bet he was tucked up in a nice warm car...hahhahah ...ok I am a frustrated wanna-be police motor cyclist....but there are times to pick when given the choice between two wheels on slick oily pot holed roads and four wheels, heater blowing away, boots off, socks on the dash board...hahhahahahah

cheers

Re: My LT is all but a write off

Interesting to hear this about Insure my Ride, I have always used them for third party cover as I am only 20 and they had the cheapest cover. Never had to make a claim.
I do know they are a subsid of AAMI which isn't always the greatest.

My mate lowsided his Honda CBR1000RR and damaged the entire right side including the frame, etc.

I told him to take it to an official Honda dealer like Bills motorcycles in SA to get it quoted on, knowing that they HAVE to replace not repair any damaged bits to guarantee structural safety. They wrote off my lightly damaged CBR125R a few years back.

AAMI forbade him from taking it to Bills (official honda dealer), even though last time I claimed against a lady driver that hit me, her AAMI cover asked me to take it to the official Honda shop (Bills).

Instead they told him to take it to this one man repair shop in Northern suburbs that is run by an absolute crooked piece of crap who skims a lot off insurance repairs.

He ended up just respraying most of the parts, even the front wheel which had a massive graze in it (god knows how he repaired it, probably with JB weld or some such rubbish).

Anyway, first ride after getting the bike back his whole bike starts falling apart. His left rearset fell off and the gear shifter was stuck in first gear.

All I can say is that you have to be really firm with insurance companies and threaten legal action.

It is usually written into the policy that you can get your own quotes and provide them to AAMI/IMR - if they are reasonably economic quotes (not exaggerated) and they cover all the damaged items such as frame, etc - they can be pressured into accepting them.

I heard of a guy who was offered 3,000 for his bike that was insured with IMR/AAMI - after wrangling the claim manager for a few months they finally settled on $12000 for all his bits after threatening legal action.

Hell if it helps your chances, before giving the bike to insurance quoter - take a brick and smash the shit out of the frame and wheels for good effect to guarantee they write the bike off for your safety.
