Where to buy new rear ME880 in Perth or Darwin?

Guys, the new rear I had put on the bike 4 weeks ago is wearing much faster than I'd anticipated. Only done 5400kms so far but looks 1/2 gone. Definately OK for maybe another 3-4k I'd think, but no way will I get 16500k out of it.
Where in Perth, or at worst Darwin, could I buy a new ME880 Marathon MBS 160/70 B 17M/C 79V REINF.
If I buy in Perth I'd probably carry it as far as Darwin then get it changed over somewhere.
I'm in Margaret River from tomorrow (20 April) till 23rd, then Fremantle 23rd-26th, over Easter....
Appreciate any leads!
Cheers

Re: Where to buy new rear ME880 in Perth or Darwin?

Thanks Greg, googling on my Iphone with 1 bar Telstra service is a bit hap-hazard...!
Funnily enough, I just found out the guy I'm camping next to is GM of an off-road bikes parts importer, and he's from Perth!
He's given me another lead, I think in roughly same area.
The problem will be timing I think, people like to shut-shop over Easter. :-(

Re: Where to buy new rear ME880 in Perth or Darwin?

Given that your probably not going to see many bends in the road from Perth north and across to the east again, why not go for a rear with a harder compound for longer wear and throw it away when you get back home or in Cairns if you want to attack some if the twisty stuff around there.?
Assuming that you will go to Cairns? if so, do not and I mean absolutely do not miss riding the Gillies Hwy from Atherton in the tablelands down to the coast.
When you have done it you will want to turn around and ride back up it and then back down it again.
It is spectacular and is some of the best back to back mountain twisties I have ridden.
Enjoy! I am jelous, especially regarding some of those Margaret River Reds!

There is nothing harder in compound available for the LT, and the metz are the considered to be the best.

Chris I dropped my pressure in the back on the long trips to aound 40-42psi to try and induce some sidewall spread, dont worry about cupping that back tyre gets really hot, hell knows what the pressure is, and FYI I got exactly 98709km on my last tyre on the perth trip and it had canvas showing all the way around so keep an eye on it they will wear "really" quick at the end,

Re: Where to buy new rear ME880 in Perth or Darwin?

Thanks guys!
Linton, great idea, will try that. I also thought that maybe if I back the compression off a touch more it might help soften the load on the tyre, let the spring work a little harder instead of the weight always being forced to thd tyre.

Re: Where to buy new rear ME880 in Perth or Darwin?

Heh, heh.... 98709km from 1 tyre.... Good one Linton! ;-)
I've only got 70,000 on the bike, and thats taken about 6 rears :-P

With some wrangling of dates (accomodation) I've organised a tyre to pick up first thing Wed morning from tyresforbikes.com in Perth, I'll carry it to Darwin ( hopes) and get it swapped over there.

Thanks again for your assistance and comments!
Cheers from sunny Margaret River, WA.

G'day Chris, hmmmmmmmmm Margaret river....white fruity wines...MMmmmmmmmmm...(boink..ugh..ok back to reality),,,so given that we all normally get around the 20,000kms outta set of tyres, and now you are more than halving this...because......

a) weight of SWMBO
b) weight of trailer, tow bar,
c) (a) + (b)
d) roughness of road surface
e) heat build up in tyre/ambient temps
f) tyre pressure suspect

whatcha reckon is/are the culprit(s)??

cheers...and thanx for the write ups/pix good stuff...

Re: Where to buy new rear ME880 in Perth or Darwin?

Hi Phil, a combination of b, d, e & f I suspect.
No way a) can be involved, not if my future health depends on it! ;-)

I'll be trying Linton's suggestion of reducing rear tyre pressure from the normal 48 to 42 because I think I was running them too high for the weight/distance/speed combination.

I'll let you know in a couple of weeks how long they last... but wearing out a rear in 4 weeks not fun... well not for the tyre anyway :-)

Re: Where to buy new rear ME880 in Perth or Darwin?

Chris... if you have never worn a tire on an LT down to the canvas, it happens extraordinarily quickly. I checked at my startoff (after work) and I would have sworn I had 1,000+ miles left on it (in the US) and stopped for dinner about an hour later and the tire had two patches of canvas. Frighteningly quick.

Re: Where to buy new rear ME880 in Perth or Darwin?

3 weeks, 6500kms on a new me880... can I get a skinny car tyre to fit?

I hope the roads north of Perth have a few more twisties!!!

If I can make it to Broome at least (another 2700km on our travel plans) I'll be happy enough to get it swapped over to the new one.
If not, I have the names of bike service companies in each of the main towns enroute.

cheers from sunny (today) Fremantle!

Freo lovely place lots of eating out, great restaurants.
that tyre looks great I dont think you will need to change it for a while at least, dont forget you need to take off the tow bar to get the wheel out pretty straight forward on the centrestand

Re: Where to buy new rear ME880 in Perth or Darwin?

In NSW I'm sure the tyre would be barely legal, less than a match-head depth in the centre. It looks deeper in the pic than it is at centre, sides barely touched.. I'll be checking it carefully at each stop.
I've got the names and numbers of each bike shop in each big town I go through to Darwin, someone's going to get to wash out some Ultraseal. Wish I'd brought the rest of it with me now!
Great day out in Freo, tomorrow we do Rottnest.

Re: Where to buy new rear ME880 in Perth or Darwin?

Loaded up and rolling on... got the spare rear in Perth this morning... lets see how far I can get on the original before having to remove the rear for the first time!
I've got the manual on my laptop... looks simple enough.

Made it to Geraldton today... bloody windy here in WA. A couple of sports bike riders I spoke to at a fuel stop said they couldn't go over 100kph because of the wind.
I thought it was a little stiff... but no real problem... overtaking road trains at up to 120kph no dramas... I think I'm carrying a bit more weight than they were... keeps it all nice and steady.
