Hi Guys,

I have just fiund out that the reverse backup control unit has carked it on my 2003 K1200LT with only 24,000km on the clock....the replacement cost from BMW is $3,100.00 ..........
I have contacted bike wreckers to no avail.... to replace it at BMW's cost I would have to sell the house.... does anyone know of an LT being wrecked in OZ or have any ideas of what I can do to sauce a new or 2nd unit without having to sell the house

Good find Linton.
Always a gamble, but less than 10% of new price.....
I don't use my reverse that often, but when you need it, you really need it!

Hope it works out for you Peter if you grab it.
From the other thread it sounds very terminal for your current module.

Re: Failed LT Reverse backup control unit $$$$$$

Thanks Axle thats the unit I need and I have reguested a shipping cost - Buy it now will not let me purchase it until the seller quotes a shipping cost --- I never, or hardly ever used the reverse gear... I put my bike in for a 20K service it was missing and back firing...bmw dealer completed the service after running on the dyno it sounded and ran great - by the time it took him to replace all the panels the bike would no start ...after a long investigation they found a leaking injector had filled the sump with fuel ... the sump has a high level cut off switch to stop the bike being started if you over fill....(thats the good luck)...investigation showed that I had picked up a dirty load of fuel with a black sediment fine enough to go though the fuel filter blocking the injector and fouling the plug..... $1300.00 later afer all fuel lines, solinoids, fuel tank system and injectors were cleaned the bike was running ok..until I arrived home and the reverse gear had failed ... back to dealer only to find that the units electronics had cooked... the quote for a replacement part from BMW a cool $3,100.00.... and I still have to pay to have it fitted and hope that there is not a problem with the wiring that caused the failure in the first place...

Re: Failed LT Reverse backup control unit $$$$$$

thats great ,glad it worked out for you, must say seems odd all this trouble and cost for dirty fuel?? reputable dealers??
I do all my own maintanence now, being five hours from any dealer have learnt this bike inside out from all the great advise from the site, not to mention saved an absolute fortune. the last Major service cost me about 400.00 and that was just parts and oils. The first thin I bought was an electronic screwdriver

Re: Failed LT Reverse backup control unit $$$$$$

We have three dealers within about 150km and they all quoted $700.00 for the 20k service for 4 hours work pluss parts.... the balance of the cost came from having to take the panels off & on a 2nd time......I was at the dealers when the bike was running after service was complete and only had to have the panels refitted it sounded great... when it would not start it took the dealer a lot of time to isolate the problem resulting in having to strip the fuel system...also fitted a new fuel filter in the tank.. they had the bike 2 days and spent more time on the bike then they charged for...you can't help wondering if the reverse unit was damaged when they were carring out the search and testing needed to find the fuel problem.....
