Snowy Ride '08

Got an update letter yesterday announcing some new things for the Snowy Ride this year.
Apparently they've had to incorporate the ride committee into a business name, now to be known as the Honda Snowy Ride, something to do with the Childrens Cancer unit and insurances and other stuff.....
in short the entry cost is going up to $60 per entrant, but they are promising bigger and better things.
Honda still the main sponsor, but trying (with Honda's support) to open up to other manufacturers also. Could be interesting!!
November 8 http://www.snowyride.com.au/
(hopefully incorporating the 3rd annual BMWLT riders Snowy gathering... )

Hi Chris
Yep, we got the same letter. Looks like it's going from strength to strength. Says there are even going to be some cross-country stages for the moto-x boys.
We will be there, see you at the usual meeting place.

I'm determined to make it too, although I get back from 20 days in Europe 2 weekends before... just hope I've "recovered" enough by then!
Actually, after 3-4 weeks travelling by plane, train & foot, I think I'll be hanging out for a good ride and fresh Aussie mountain air!

Unable to attend again this year, but the spirit is with you all. I'll dig back through the pics from #1 and reminisce. Goes to a worthy cause too. Enjoy.

You will make it CWS.

Last year I arrived back late on the Sunday night from Europe and the US having been away 5 weeks.
We left early on the Wednesday for the Snowy ride and covered over 500km the first day including riding the Alpine way accross Mount Hotham.

PS. As you can see I have taken up your suggestion and joined this forum.

Welcome Max!
Glad you dropped in. Best site for loads of info on the LT.
Look forward to meeting you at Thredbo.
We'll have lost another LT for our group catchup this year, but gained a 'Winger ... (you know who you are ).

Re: Snowy Ride '08

So its drawing closer...
just paid for our entries into the ride, accommodation is sorted with a group of friends in a house this year, rather than the "usual" House of Ullr.
Who else is going down (or up/across) this year to Thredbo?

Should we arrange to meet for drinks on Saturday afternoon again? (Bet there'll be a couple of takers....)

cheers

Re: Snowy Ride '08

Just a few days to go to Snowy Ride, and despite my best efforts to stop myself from getting there on my bike, I'm determined to ride down!

Just before leaving Europe (Paris) a week and a bit ago, I fell down some stairs and sprained my right ankle... after an interesting flight home (wheelchairs on and off flights!) and a few days rest, with some heavy strapping I was able to get back on the bike after about 4 days to start riding to work again. I"ve learned not to use the footbrake much anyway, so figured I should be OK.
So, last Thursday night I was about to leave work and walking (hobbling) down a flight of stairs inside our building to get to where I park the bike, I slipped on the second last step, twisted and sprained my left ankle, dropping a PC I was carrying in the process... this time I got an ambulance to the hospital and had both ankles x-rayed.. nothing broken either side thankfully, but the newly damaged left foot is swollen worse than the right one was.
I'll take another day off work to rest the foot, but I'm determined to ride down to Thredbo on Friday morning.. I figure I've got another 2 or 3 days for the swelling to go down before I try riding again, as I have to get the bike home from work so I can pack it for the 3 days away!

And now for the weather.....
forecast on weather.com for Thredbo says:
Friday scattered showers 15 C
Saturday showers 9 C
Sunday mostly cloudy 14 C

typical....

see you there, by hook or by crook... for a Saturday afternoon drink!

Re: Snowy Ride '08

OK, quick update....

I saw Brian & Mim at Snowy, and....... thin air ????? well, not quite.
And it was such a lovely day on Saturday for riding (cold and windy!)

I think there was 2,984 registrations (at $60 /head), and they raised over $250,000.

I spotted about 5 or 6 different LT's for the entire weekend (including mine).
I may have missed a couple because we only did a ride from Thredbo to Charlotte Pass and back on Saturday, but I watched the entire Mass Ride come through and there were only a few I spotted in that group.

Friday ride down was nice, if a little overcast and cool. We got to Thredbo just on 5pm, as it started sprinkling. Within 15 mins it was raining steadily, and some friends who stayed with us but didn't leave Canberra till 5pm were wet the whole way down! It rained fairly heavily that night, but by morning it stopped and was just cold and windy.
Saturday, and Thredbo top station report said it was 5 deg with -10 windchill factor on top! So we had a very cool and blustery ride up to Charlottes Pass, but it was still fun.
Charlottes was open for people to stay this year, and had a sausage sizzle on at the pub for lunch, so that was a welcome stop.

Big turnout for the presentation. A lady from NSW won the Goldwing, and the CBR1000 will be drawn at Sydney Motorcycle Show.
Police again praised the behaviour of the bike riders, apart from a few complaints of crossing double-lines, only 1 guy got hurt (broken leg) after coming off around Adaminaby, and they blamed the wind blasts for that. Mind you, I thought you're supposed to ride to the conditions.... anyway....

Sunday was much better, the front had passed through completely and we had a comfortable and sunny ride home.

As usual, Snowy is a great weekend, whatever the weather...

cheers

I'll come over next year, rent a GS and swell the numbers. Did you get all 5 LT'ers together in a group pikkie?
