Snowy Ride- which way to go?

Hi,

For those heading to Thredbo next week, which way are you going to go? Any suggestions from Sydney - other than straight there via Canberra? We are leaving Syd on Friday morning.

cheers,

Brendan

Hi Brendan. You're looking at about a 6 hour ride if you went straight down the main highway to Canberra then through to Cooma, Jindabyne & Thredbo.
There are "backroad" routes you can take if you want to wind your way down, but 2-up I normally reserve the "fun bits" for the weekend, it's long enough for the SO on the back as a straight run.
Kerry and I are leaving Thursday lunchtime, and stay o'night at a friends at Royalla, just south of Canberra off the Monaro H'way.
We drop onto the start of the M5 (about 5 mins ride from my place) then stick on that & Hume H'way (coffee stop at Sutton Forest servo on LHS), take Canberra turnoff (Federal H'way), then just before hitting Canberra city veer left on Majura Rd to bypass the city itself. It winds left of the city and leads to the Monaro Hway which you need to be on to get to Cooma.
Note sure what time we are leaving Royalla to go to Cooma (about an hour run) but there'll be 8 bikes I think in our group, so if you're coming through fairly early, give me a call on the way. 0418411499. Otherwise, see you down there! We can try to meet Friday afternoon at House of Ullr bar if weather's good.

ps... expect plenty of police presence on the way, so watch your speed, particularly around Goulburn, Canberra & Monaro H'Way.

thanks Chris.

we have to go via Berry, probably go down to Batemans Bay and then come back across on the Kings Highway to Braidwood. I need to find out if Captains Flat/ Snowball rd is sealed.

Cheers,

brendan

Hi there Chris
Just reading your post and saw the Majura Road mention and jumped on the trip planner to see where it was as I did not know. Went through Canberra last year and took a wrong turn somewhere, so if I can avoid it that will be good.
Anyway, using the planner, I found Sutton Road which also goes around Canberra and the turn-off is a bit before Majura Road, and comes out further down too. Would that be a good way to go? Do you know this road at all?

Brendan, checked it out on my Garmin Mapsource and Google Earth, looks like it turns to dirt road just outside Cooma, but you cant tell how far back towards Braidwood as the ground maps aren't clear enough. Also just called my friend at Royalla who's driven all through there quite a bit, he thinks its still dirt too. Seems you'll have tar if you go all the way on Kings Hway to Queanbeyan.
Brian, yes, looks like Sutton Rd, then through Q'byan, then turn left onto Old Cooma Rd will also avoid Canberra and brings you out just above Royalla. I've driven Sutton Rd, but many years ago when I lived in Yass for a little while.
Almost tempted to go that way too, I got booked by a flash-for-cash van last time I drove down through Majura Rd, 90 in an 80 zone (didn't see the speed sign change, late at night).

Oh, by the way, I'm told it was 2 deg C at Thredbo Top Station today . While Sydney was dry and 27, Royalla was light rain and 10. Dress for 4 seasons!!!
