Snowy Ride & Aussie LT Riders Meet & Greet Nov 10th 2007

The idea of an Aussie LT Riders "Meet and Greet" weekend has been kicked around for some time, and now its finally going to happen.

This year a Meet and Greet weekend will be held in Thredbo on the weekend of November 10th, and will coincide with the annual "Snowy Ride" in support of the Childrens Cancer Research Institute.

See www.snowyride.com.au for more info on the Snowy Ride.

While the Snowy Ride has always been a fantastic annual event on the motorcycling calendar. This years event will provide the opportunity for all Australian owners of the legendary BMW K1200LT, to come together and enjoy a weekend of friendship, good company and no doubt plenty of laughs, in one of our countries premier motorcycle touring regions.

This will be an excellent opportunity to meet up with fellow K1200LT riders from all across Australia, and participate in an LT owners group ride on the Saturday around some of the fantasticly scenic roads that the Snowy Mountains region is well renowned for.

Plans are underway to arrange a group dinner on the Saturday night, which will cost approx $40 per person for a 3 course BBQ style meal at one of the local resturants in Thredbo Village.

Most people that have thus far shown interest have indicated they will likely be staying in Thredbo on both the Friday and Saturday nights (the 9th and 10th of November). So there will be plenty of time to get together and chat over the coarse of the weekend, and to re-acquaint old friendships, and perhaps make new ones.

Accommodation in Thredbo over that weekend does tend to fill quickly, as the the Snowy ride usually attracts some 3000 + people to the region for the weekend. If you intend coming, its best to book your accommodation early and avoid dissapointment.

This should be a great weekend, and hopefully we'll get a good roll up of Lt's for the weekend. The more the merrier it will be!

If your interested in coming along please add your name to the list below, and advise if you'd like to take part in teh group dinner on Saturday night.

Finally, I'd urge everyone who intends coming along you take a look at the snowy ride website, and in particular, enter the ride itself.

The entry fee costs $50 and that enters you into a raffle to win a number of possible Honda prizes, but more importantly, the entry fee goes to the Childrens Cancer Research Institute which is a great cause.

Hope to see you there

Cheers

Daz,
Mate the place I've booked is a two room apartment that sleeps five, and was $160 per night. Unfortunately the beds are all taken.

If you have a bit of a ring around you should be able to get a double room for a reasonerable rate.

Cheers

Hi Daza. This website seems to list a lot of the accomodation. You'll probably have to call a few (sooner the better) as online booking seems to have most places I just checked as "unavailable", but that could be anything from, "Yes, we are fully booked" to "We haven't updated our website"...... Probably figure on anywhere from say $70 - $200 a night depending on where in Thredbo you try to get in... Quite a few people stay at Jindabyne too and ride in for the days, although that makes dinner etc a bit harder (not great roads to ride at night-time).... I think we pay around $130 a night or so at Ullr (but then its owned by friends of Kerry). Cheaper down toward Friday Flat I believe....
Attached is a pdf map, with names of accomodation etc.

I agree with what Chris has noted. The road from Thredbo to Jindabyne isn't a good one to be on at night time. Lots of roos, wombats and even the occasional brumby.

I rode it in 2004 at night, and it was Ok, but I had to ride really slowley. I think I sat on around 60kph the whole way.

Cheers

Daz, Kasee's is quite nice, at least the room we had there in 2004 was really good. Watch the driveway though, its very steep and very little turning room at the bottom, especially if there are several other bikes already there!! Kasee's is on the top road just off the main road, so quite high up, but great views of the mountain. A couple of pics from 2004 attached.

Hi Jake,
If you and Simone are interested, I've had two people cancel who were going to stay with us in a two bedroom unit at the Berntis in Thredbo.

The unit is set up to sleep five people, so you and Simone could have the main bedroom which has a queen size bed and its own ensuite bathroom.

The other three single beds are in a kind of combined kitche, living and dining area, and there is a second seperate bathroom off from the living area.

You'd be sharing the unit with myself, my father Ted, and a good friend of mine John, but would have plenty of privacy with your own room.

Split five ways the room only costs $32 per person per night.

Let me know if your interested.

Cheers

Barry

Looking good so far.

Who else is hoping to be at the Snowy Ride Meet and Greet in November, but aren't able to confirm if they can make it just yet?

Hoping to get some idea of potential numbers that might be at the Saturday night dinner?

Thumbs down Bloody men

Hi guys

Sorry to stuff you around Barry, but Jake has just realised the date for the Snowy get together clashes with a volunteer committment he has, so unfortunately we have to pull out of the event.

I was very much looking foward to coming and I could go on for half an hour about bloody men, putting volunteer stuff before social events that are few and far between due to shift work, and most of all, getting their wives to do their dirty work and post their messages for them.

Have fun. Look foward to trying to catch up on the next event.

Simone (for Jake)

Hi Simone and Jake,

Thats Ok, sorry that you guys won't be able to make it to the Snowy Ride this year.

If anyone else is hoping to come and needs a bed in Thredbo let me know, theres one queen room with private ensuite available in our unit. Shared cost is $32 per person per night. Unit is booked for the Friday and Saturday nights.

I'm heading away for a few days of camping and trail riding with my kids for the next four days, so won't be able to respond to any emails until Thursday the 5th.

Cheers for now

Red face

G'day Guy's,

Definitely upset the wife on this one. Remembrance day is my vol brigade open day, 75 years. I manage this unit so am unfortunately committed.
She is right though (they are always right) Shift work and to much vol work. Will look at this and see what alternatives their are.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Note to self:

Don't ever ride trail bike up steep dam wall in first hour of 3 day ride. Said trail bike may somersalt back down dam wall going end over end and thoroughly destroy itself, and you will have to pack up and drive home again with three dissapointed kids.

Does anyone want to buy the remains of a Yamaha TT600?
Only slightly bent frame. (You can pretend your doing power slides while riding in a straight line). Broken brake a clutch levers and front brake master cylinder, slight buckle in both wheels. Oh, and the front forks might need a little attention as well.

But other than that its a great bike.

Would suit sight impaired person with keen desire to ride.
Best offer and willing to negotiate.

Cheers

That looks like a lot of fun Chris!
Maybe I should do that to it ... at least falling off in the snow would be a softer landing. lol

The kids were cool about it in the end. I considered staying on, so the kids could keep riding, however the property we were on had a lot of rough and rocky ground that the kids would have to negotiate to get to the better trails out the back of the property, and I wasn't comfortable with the idea of letting the kids head off riding on their own just in case they got into any difficultly, come off or got injured.

The generall consensus was that the best thing to do was call it quites and head for home.

Cheers

Good that you made it out alive Barry . Once my external learning courses calm down a bit, I have an old ag bike (Suzuki DT125) that I want to fix up so I can go riding with my young bloke (he has a Yammie RT100).

As for the Snowy ride, don't think that I can make it this year. The Coffs AGM slugged us a little bit financially. You know how it is. She says "That's a nice trailer, can we afford it? Who cares, lets get it anyway........" So Mrs Dog has a bigger shoe box for when we (hopefully) go to the Townsville AGM next year.

Ride safe everyone

Hi Dave,
Yep I know what its like trying to get time out, and also get the finances in order to take on two "extended" motorcycling holidays in the same year.

My lovely wife Karen is fully supportive of me "doing my own thing" and taking a week out each year to get along to the Snowy ride. But I guess theres a limit to how accommodating she'd be prepared to be, given we only have a certain number of opportunities to take holidays each year.

So the idea of me wanting to use up "two weeks" or more of our holidays to first do the Snowy ride, and then an AGM, probably won't go down well given Karen has no interest in bikes. I'd need to seriously earn additional brownie points in advance of that happening, but I'm not complaining.

As for the Snowy Ride meet & greet dinner proposed for the Saturday night (Nov 10th), the most affordable place I've found is Drakes restuarant in the Snow Goose Lodge. As I mentioned in an earlier post, they will do a 3 course BBQ style meal for $40 per person, which compared to the other restuarants I called is great value.

The only challenge with the Snow Goose Lodge is that its on Banjo Drive which is near the top of the village, so we have a few steps to go up to get there from the village square. (About 5 minutes walk up, 2 minutes roll back down).

Our only other cost effective option was to eat at the pub. They won't take bookings, so we'd need to get there early to try and get seating, so Drakes restuarant is perhaps the better option to work with.

Your thoughts please ????? (from those who intend coming)

Cheers

dinner

I'm pretty happy with whatever we all agree on (is that sitting on the fence??). Snow goose sounds OK to me, 'cause lining up to get a Pizza last year was a nightmare. There's a similar BBQ style dinner at Ullr, but they get booked out with the houseguests pretty quick, may already be booked in fact.

Just finished installing my HIDs and Motolights, and Aux input cable, so I'm stuffed at the moment. Took 2 & 1/2 days, but then I stripped the bike back a lot. Light seems to be good, just need to get out of this rain (again) so I can test them

Fair enough.

I've booked the Snow Goose restuarant for 20 people for the Saturday night. Extra people coming won't be a problem, we just need to confirm numbers a few weeks before hand.

Closer to the date we'll put our heads together and work out a plan on where to meet up in Thredbo on Saturday morning and what time. What route we're going to take for the group ride, and where we'll stop and have lunch.

Chris you've done a few snowy rides in the past, so how would you feel about planning a route for the group ride, and somewhere to have lunch on the Saturday ?

Cheers

Sheesh ... its August already! Only 12 weeks (or there abouts) to the Snowy ride now. It will be here before we know it, and with the good snow season this year, there should still be snow on the higher peeks come November, unless we have a heat wave through October.

I'm looking forward to getting back down there again and enjoying those great roads in the Alpine National Park. Have already sent my Snowy ride entry form in.

Anyone still considering coming along to the Snowy ride meet and greet in November and haven't as yet booked accommodation. I still have two beds (either 2 singles, or there's 1 queen for a couple) available in the unit I've booked at the Berntis Mountain Inn for the Friday and Saturday nights.

Cost is $32 per person per night. Anyone interested in taking a bed, just let me know.

Cheers

Hey Barry,
I'll take that queen bed if available. Hoping that the bride will accompany, but if not, happy to wear the additional costs. But, if there is a definite couple that need it, then no drama about a single...

Hi Ian,

Ok, I'll put your name on the Queen bed.
The unit we're staying in is a 2 bedroom 2 bathroom one. The main bedroom has the Queen bed with its own ensuite bathroom, so if Lena comes with you, she won't have to worry about privacy.

The second room is kind of a combined lounge room, eatery and bedroom with the 3 single beds, and a seperate shower/toilet off from one end. My father, myself, and a mate of mine John will be sharing this room.

Cheers

Thanks Barry! That's excellent...but, if there is someone that needs it, I would be happy to be swapped back to a single...

Up your way sitting in the Qantas club as I type this, unfortunately just an overnighter for my neices 21st last night, now off to Sydney for meetings Monday and Tuesday then back to Melbourne... Would be great if I could take this sunny weather back south with me!

Speak soon, Ian

Clash of dates, so NO Snowy ride for me!

Bit of bad news people.
Have discovered there is a clash of dates between the Snowy Ride, and a sailing regatta that I really want to compete in up at Noosa in November.

As such, I now won't be going to the Snowy Ride/ Meet and Greet in November.

I still have the 2 bedroom suite booked at the Berntis Mountain Inn for the Friday and Saturday nights. The unit costs $320 for 2 nights, and will sleep four to five people. Ian if your interested in taking the booking, and maybe finding a few extra people to fill the other beds, please let me know ASAP. Otherwise I'll have to cancel the room fairly soon to give the owners an opportunity to re book it with someone else.

Also the Saturday night dinner at the Snowgoose restuarant is booked in my name, so if someone can volunteer to be the new contact for the restuarant, that will be great.

Cheers for now

Thumbs down bummer

Sad to hear you wont be joining us Barry!
You just know there's no way that skimming around at hi-speed on top of the water in the sunshine can beat slamming around in snowy-sleety-windy-rainy-sunny conditions (we'll get it all!) in the mountains...

Put me down as a Snow Goose contact if you need to. Email me to let me know the setup, ie, how many expected, what if only a few turn up, etc etc....

next time, eh!

Hi Chris,

Skimming across the water in the sunshine on my cats has become my #1 leisure activity these days. Since November last year when I brought the Nacra, I've pretty much sailed every second weekend, and have continued sailing right through winter. I've just started racing, and have been bitten by the "bug" bad!!!!

I used to come home from my bike rides thinking "whens the next bike ride?", but now it's, "when are we going sailing again?". LOL

The poor old LT doesn't get a look in these days, and I have it up for sale (again). I'm still in two minds about whether I should sell it or not. I've ridden less than a 1000k's on it since last November, so it hardly justifies paying the rego and insurance each year.

I honestly don't know what I should do (which is kind of odd for me), so I've put it on the market at $16,500. I figure if it sells, it was meant to be.
If it doesn't sell, I was meant to keep it.

I know I'll be content with whatever happens. If it sells, well I can always buy another one later if I want too. There are about 14 LT's for sale at present on bikesales.com.au alone.

Cheers

Barry

6 weeks...

6 weeks to go. Paid my dues for "the ride" the other day, so I'm locked in.
How's everyone else's plans going?

G'day Chris,

Yep the six weeks will go fast, so it's not long now. My chances of being there are still fairly "remote" at this point, but I have already entered the ride just in case. So maybe I can still win a new Goldwing (wouldn't that be ironic?)

I've pm'd you directly with all the details regarding the dinner that was planned for the Saturday night.

Cheers
