Letter on the loss of guns in Australia

I am looking for a copy of a letter that some one from Australia wrote, in the letter they were telling how we (US & Canadians) should fight to keep our guns. He explained how you had lost your right to have & bear arms.

He include how the crime rate went up after your guns had to be turned in. I would appreciate an and all information I can get.

No "right to bear arms" in Australia

Hi George,
I am unfamiliar with the letter that you are referring to and suggest that perhaps a search on the internet might be fruitful...

From what you have said, I wouldn't place too much credibility in the author of the letter however, as Australians have never had "the right to bear arms"...there is no mention of such in our Constitution that was passed by the Brittish Government in 1900 (and came into force on 1 January 1901)...and there was certainly no such right (or Constitution) existing prior to this... Any attempt to suggest that a rise in crime statistics is related to gun control is a nonsense an I would refer anyone who wishes to argue this to the Australian Bureau of Statistics and in particular the National Crime Statistics Unit...25 years in policing at senior levels, I have heard the various pro shooters associations try to use such arguments and they don't 'hold water' so to speak. There are way too many demographic variables involved including unemployment, immigration, cultural issues etc etc and many many credible academics have written on such...to try and just use the increase in gun control to explain any increases in crime rates...what absolute rubbish!

We have tight gun control laws across all of Australia where you must be licensed to carry a gun. There are various types of licences ranging from those who need a firearm for their employment (such as security guards) through to sporting shooters. Hand-gun licenses are much more difficult to obtain and you must be a member of a pistol club. Long-arms you must have a reason for having them (such as being a farmer and controlling pests) and/or be a member of a gun club...

I am very well aware of how passionate many of those in the States are about their "right to bear arms" and I would really prefer that the Australian & New Zealand forum is not utilised to discuss the pros & cons of gun ownership in the USA and strongly suggest that any such discussions are contained to the USA forums...

Thanks. I had the letter sent to me baCK ABOUT 1992. I thought I saved it, but in retiring lost it. I wanted to compare it with what was on my goggle search.
Here in PA(Pennsylvania) the powers tobe, want to have all gun owner is PA register and pay $10/gun each year. This is just another way fr them to learn who has what.
Hope this others don't get to carried away on this it was not my intent.

Thanks again.

What a crock of shite that so called "letter" is, glad it's on Snopes and been pretty well debunked there.

What I loved about this was the absolute satisfaction implied in the reply (my emphasis): "THAT is the one I was looking for".....deftly avoiding all that bothersome verbiage on the Snopes site which debunked the central thesis of the fake letter.

This is the same state that recently voted to remove helmet laws, so the level of arguement is not the highest.

funny stuff there, helmet laws are all about insurance these days

the ins companies have the lobby for no helmets

they pay out less over the olong haul with deaths instead of rehabilitation

Please take this debate elsewhere...

Thanks Guys,
Please take this debate back to the USA forums...

Fact: All Australian States have helmet laws - you must wear helmets in Australia therefore no need for debate here...

Fact: Australia does not have a 'right to bear arms' therefore again no need for debate here...

There are lots of helmet and gun threads in the USA forums to play in...so unless you have specific discourse relating to Australia & New Zealand please utilise them instead of the Australian forums where no one from downunder is contributing...
