Darwin to Adelaide or the other way round

Hi everyone,

firstly I wanted to thanks to the guys that offered up some sound advice for our first multi-day tour. Although we didn't get to do the longer route that I was asking about last time we did take the Queens birthday long weekend and did a 1200km round trip. The advice of 400km a day as a comfortable target was spot on! It was also the best ride we have ever had, there is no comparing the roads here to the UK once you get out of the city and hit the long open roads the RT was made for, it was glorious!

The great news is that the trip didnt put the Mrs off, in fact it did the opposite, she wants to plan our next trip, this time a longer and one. The initial route we were thinking of was Sydney to Perth, one way, and have the bike shipped back as we just dont have enough holidays left to be away from work for a return trip, but then Darwin to Adelaide was thrown into the mix since it goes through the centre and that is a part of this great country which we havent seen yet.

interested to know if anyone on here has done that route?

cheers

Re: Darwin to Adelaide or the other way round

Hey Mark glad both you enjoyed the trip I haven't done either, Chris has been right around.
We have been to Alice springs and back good ride but its a bit boring once you leave port Augusta, it's nice to cruise at 130k + just need to watch wild life, great gorges and stuff around Alice springs. it wouldn't matter which trip you do, everything you see is new, and if you are going passed, drop in for a cuppa

edit: actually I have ridden to Perth and back! 4 times on the bike, about 14 times in the car we spent some time in Perth and I still enjoy the ride

Re: Darwin to Adelaide or the other way round

Have done Darwin to Adelaide twice and Alice to Adelaide 4 times. Used to live in NT.
The ride is interesting only once. Rode is good. Long way between towns, straight roads. Best time to travel is either September or May
Don't do it in the Summer.
Regards

Re: Darwin to Adelaide or the other way round

Thanks Linton / PCH

PCH - this may sound a bit of a silly question but with it being a North/South route I was thinking about does it make the ride easier if you are not facing the sun (glare etc..), therefore is it better to ride Darwin to Adelaide vs. Adelaide to Darwin? or are there any other reasons why its better to go one direction vs the other?

Any recommendations on places to stay on route?

Doesn't seem to matter which direction.
Weather is the important aspect.
