Need (or want) to stay "connected"?

Do you need (or want) to stay "connected" on the road? I'm not talking about cell phones in the helmet here, but a way to use email or do online banking on the web. We tried the smart phone route. Then last week tried taking the laptop (it was OK). While packing for a week, the laptop took more space than we liked, so we tried the tablet route.

Here's reasons for doing it and what we ended up with and why on our blog by clicking here . Of course your mileage may vary by preference of operating system or needs.

For the last 3 years my iPad has been the only computer I carry when travelling, there are some limitations compared to a laptop but the ease of use and small form factor more than make up for it.

I have a laptop small enough to take up the space of the CD changer in the right side. I have the Kathy's back designed for the CD changer and it fits right on top of it. Wifi, no builtin DVD but I could pack one if needed. Most hotels have wifi. I do have banking and weather on my smart phone, so I don't really need the laptop but its convenient for the bigger screen and real keyboard.

It was pretty much our reason for going the tablet or iPad route when we travel. When you tour 2 up, space is used up even quicker! We really didn't want a full computer and like the other post, most hotels have wifi anyway. Our credit unions don't have "apps" so online banking is done through a browser anyway.

Re: Need (or want) to stay "connected"?

About three years ago I purchased a Acer Aspire 1 (link below) to use while traveling for work. The only thing I did to it was to upgrade the RAM to 2 gig. I loaded Open Office which enables me to work on any MS Office files. It is just the right size to take on the motorcycle. I am still looking to purchase a iPAD in the near future for its screen size.
