Winters are way too long to endure waiting for another good opportunity to ride. So we’ve created the opportunity by going to our friend Skip Mascorro of MotoDiscovery and asking him to put together a Road Tour designed and priced specially for the BMW Luxury and Sport Touring Community. And we wanted good ‘value’ compared to his regular tour prices. Boy did he deliver with big savings! This trip is similar to their Colonial Mexico Tour- Click here to see that tour and a video.
Now ready for Feb 2010- A Winter Escape Ride to Mexico!
Get out of the cold and into the warmth and friendliness of a taste of Europe just south of the border. This is it- a custom Road Ride just for our community. Join with community friends and your ‘special someone’ for the first Winter Escape Mexico Ride! This will be a road tour, meaning paved roads perfectly suited for your luxury or sport touring BMW motorcycle. And non-riders can come along too in the support van!
Basically all you need to do is bring your passport and your bike with documents and show up in McAllen, Texas. The rest will be handled by MotoDiscovery, who will provide professional bilingual staff to guide and pamper us for a 7 day European style adventure. If you’ve been on a MotoDiscovery Tour before, you know their motto of ‘Adventure in Style’ means you’ll have the best in lodging, food and fun!
The Winter Escape Hotels listed below are those planned at the time this ride was developed.
Note: these selections are subject to change based on availability at the time of booking
ITINERARY (mileages are approximate only)

Day 1. McAllen, Texas. This is home to many part time Texans who migrate here from colder climates to enjoy warm and sunny winter temperatures. The group will gather at the Hotel Renaissance Casa de Palmas by 5 p.m. for an informative briefing. A currency exchange will take place turning a few dollars into a lot of pesos. Participants will already be well informed and ready for their journey with MotoDiscovery having provided, well in advance, the Information Booklet and addressed all questions related to insurance and the simple crossing process into Mexico. A festive dinner will follow.

Day 2. Santiago (160 miles) Hotel La Paloma (formerly Apostal Santiago)
The border crossing will be uneventful, then it’s time to hit the road to a pleasant little village founded in the early 17th century. Accommodations are conveniently located on the plaza where local crafts are often available for purchase.
Day 3. Real de Catorce (220 miles) Hotel Real (no website) Visit the City Website.
Through the high desert and rolling hills, the group will ride lightly traveled rural roads. Arriving in Matehaula, the bikes will be safely parked and transportation arranged for a special excursion high into the mountains on a long cobble stone road, through a tunnel and back in time to a remote mining town known as Reàl de Catorce. You’ll be nearing 10 thousand feel so bring a jacket! This will be an opportunity to experience the real Mexico. You may recognize our colorful host, the don Humberto, for his bit parts in movies such as Pirates of the Caribbean and the Brad Pitt & Julia Roberts film, The Mexican, which incidentally was filmed in this mining town. The trip to Real de Catorce will be a highlight and an adventure to remember!

Day 4. San Miguel de Allende (230 miles) – Hotel La Morada (2 nights)
Today you will ride a quick pace down the open main divided highway 57. San Miguel is the “buzz” for the expat seeking a grand lifestyle and a Mexican getaway. This Colonial era town is a thriving art community with fine dining, excellent accommodations, and fun night life (band leader Doc Severensen is but one luminary who lives here!).
Day 5. San Miguel de Allende is one of only a handful of official Colonial Monument cities and a World Heritage site. You will enjoy this extra day of leisure, shopping, meandering around the native market and of course the mandatory sunset ritual of gathering in the quaint plaza in front of the gothic 18th century cathedral, a romantic and colorful way to experience San Miguel.
Day 6 Jalpan- (225 miles) - Hotel Mision Jalpan
This will be a world class riding day rising from the arid desert, curving on mountain roads to the cool pine forests. Jalpan is a simple village graced by one of Junipero’s many 17th century baroque style cathedrals. This will be a ride to remember.

Day 7. Santa Engracia (300 miles) – Hacienda Santa Engracia
Rise early for a great ride that now takes you to the eastern slopes of the Sierra Madre Oriental, descending to the tropics where coffee plantations climb up the side of steep hills and the flora is lush and colorful. Native Indians can be seen in their typical garb as you are in the heart of Huasteca country. Your day will end as you deviate from the main road through a sleepy village and to an authentic hacienda, a long time stay for MotoDiscovery where we have been treated as family for nearly three decades. They will certainly have a fiesta to celebrate our final night in old Mexico.
Day 8 to the Border, McAllen, Texas (240 miles) – expect an uneventful ride to the border. Some may wish to make more miles down the road or you may want to spend the night in McAllen. The tour now over, it will be time for planning the next MotoDiscovery adventure!
