Hi all. I have just purchased a new 2011 RT and it has the Audio options with Sirius. Very nice bike btw. I have a GSA which I love and this is just amazing on road compared to the panzer.

Anyway, what I want to know is how to get audio to my headset (Etymotics) via a 3.5mm jack. The idea is to get all the audio normally going to the speakers to an audio out (3.5mm jack) and use the bikes handlebar controls as normal. I have an ipod with the BMW adapter cable in the glove box now and that works well. But for the life of me I can't figure out how to get audio via wire (3.5mm) to my earpieces. On the panzer I have a gps with xm and I use the audio out (3.5mm) on that unit itself. And I would prefer to not have to buy a bluetooth helmet but I'm not seeing another way so far.

Anyhow, if someone could point me in the right direction I would be very appreciative.

 

Maybe you're making this more complicated than needed. Why not run your wire directly from the I-pod to your helmet?

Well, I want to get all my audio functions to the headset. Sirius, iPod, AM/FM, etc.,. I don't think I can do that thru the ipod. Am I wrong?

I just got a 2011 couple of months ago.

I understand what your trying to do. Is there a audio out jack? ( I checked owner's manual but couldn't find any info)
I know there's an audio in but I never noticed if there's an out

If there is seems like that should do what you want

I don't think there is an audio out jack. Which is my problem. I guess I will see if I can modify the extra cabling under the triple clamp for aux speakers or see if I can find a bluetooth receiver with a aux 3.5mm out.

There is an audio out plug on the 10 model its behind the clocks,on the 11 model it is located where the sat nav power socket is located on the headstock.You need a bmw plug to fit this then you need to activate this socket in the radio settings.I think its designed for extra speakers but I used it to fit a bluetooth dongle.You will be able to wire up something to suit your needs from it.

you find our or how you resolve this issue?

I've read several similar threads including the one referenced in Cessna's post.
That guy's solution was to cut the connector off and hard-wire the connections
he wanted to make.

Cessna, could you please tell us the part number, source or connector type
and number for the connector you got?

I could hard wire a solution, but don't like the idea of doing that if a connector
is available. Bluetooth conectivity is possible, and the latest Bluetooth
is greatly improved and allows connection and integration of a huge number
of gadgets...but, the frequency response and dynamic fidelity it offers is
still not even close to a wired in-ear monitor.

I ordered the connector from my local BMW dealer (Iron Horse Motorcycles in Tucson). If my memory is correct the part number is 611655. It is a connector pre-wired with some leads that you can connect as required to make an output jack. I haven't tried it yet so I can't say it works. From the thread I posted it looks like it will!

Ok. And to be clear that will attach to the loose cable/socket meant for additional speakers hanging under the triple clamp now. And I would need to fashion an aux outlet from this new plug and wires referenced by this part number?

And that thread is really good so I hope to have some luck with this. And maybe get the gps audio in the mix too?! Nice!

I bought an extension lead on ebay with a male female 3.5ml on cut the male off and soldered to the wires on the plug.Yes the plug pushes on once you remove the protective cap.The sat nav from the bmw iv also just plugs into the other socket it is just a 2 spade plug not sure if they sell a plug to fit this.If you have the nav iv its plug and play and reduces volume on radio/ipod while sat nav speaks.

I will look for one of those and build what I need. And yes, I will use the BMW Navi 4 so as to integrate easily. There was a plug in the navi box and I assumed it was just for power but apparently it sends audio, too. All told, there are apparently 3 sockets available on the 2011's. 2 loose under the triple clamp and 1 behind the stereo somewhere. My understanding that 2 under the triple clamp serve gps functions (I'm not sure which is which) and the one behind the stereo is the one I need to build off of.

I checked the part number on the plug once I got home and could look at it. The packaging has a couple of numbers on it.It has a German label on it with the BMW number 61 1 655. It also has another part number on a different label which is 83300413584. It also states that the Dealer order number is 0009341. The price was $19.80 and my dealer ordered it for me. BTW, they knew nothing about this plug or the method of using it to connect to hook up rear speakers or for use to wire in a headset jack.

Cessna, thanks for the info' on the connector.

HP Challenged, If I'm reading your last post correctly there are three outlet/access sockets.
One is for the Nav system. One is for "rear speakers." These two are located behind
the steering head/triple clamp. The third comes out of the back of the stereo unit.

You said in your last post you were going to build your lead off of the one behind the
stereo.

Here's my question. have you tested and know exactly what signals and what the
differences are between the connection located near the nav connection and the
connection coming out of the back of the stereo?

My GUESS (and I emphasize GUESS) is the connections will cause/allow different
things to happen. What I mean by that is one connection may provide audio out
signal using the multi-controller when it's in "radio control mode" and the other outlet
may provide audio out of whatever signal is chosen (ipod, radio, nav only) as well
as allowing navigation system override so the nav system voice can be heard. The
signal levels are probably also different....one for bluetooth "control unit" and
one with enough power to drive rear speakers.

In short, I'd like to know exactly which outlet/connection does what?

For me, the best of all possible things would be a connection that allows me a
connection to hear which ever "mode"/signal I want AND choose that signal
and volume using the multi-controller.

Phil has posted a pic of the cable that will hook up directly to the hanging cable in question. At this point I'm not sure which connectors are which. I do know ( or at least hope) that the connectors on said cables are all different so making a mistake should be avoidable. I believe that 2 are for gps functionality, 1 for power and 1 for audio in to the system. The other cable we are shooting for is the one we are buying this other cable for and we intend to splice an aux jack to the wires and probably can google how to do that since if it carries stereo audio it shouldn't be rocket science to sort that out. www.parts-express.com

As far as the specifics I'm not that far along yet. If the 2 for the gps require the gps specific cables then the only 'wild card' would be the hanging cable for extra speakers which is where I am going to want to know more. The thread cessna linked us to does talk about this some and is helpful.

HP Challenged, I finally had the time to read through several threads and sort out
the info' for the various model years. It got very confusing when three different guys
were discussing the wiring/locations and functions for thee different model years in the same threads.

It appears BMW listened and made it simple on the 2011 model. The connectors are
just below the instruments (exactly as shown in the manual) and easy to access.
One is for the nav system and the other is nav audio/stereo out. According to what is
posted, if you connect to the nav audio/stereo out (2011 model) you will
get full function of radio/ipod/nav using volume control and multi-controller.

Yes that is exactly right. The BMW Navi 4 has the 2 plugs needed already in the kit. What I missed before when I looked at it was that the 2 plugs are at the end of a single cable coming from the GPS cradle in the navi 4 kit box. So that is a done deal. plug and play. Now for me to get audio I will have to attach an aux female outlet to the cable that I am buying for that 3rd connector that is under the triple clamp on 2011 models.

I have done some research and believe I know how to build the whole thing and will post pics and a how to when I get the cable and have the time which unfortunately won't be until next week sometime. But at any rate I know what to do and that is the main thing.

Ok all this is what and how I worked this out for myself. You may want to use your own tactics.

As far as the Navi 4 goes on the 2011 with Sirius there is an issue. And I don't have a 2011 without Sirius to confirm but this is what I think. The new BMW/Sirius antennae is located just forward of the instrument cluster and is mounted on a metal tray. This effectively blocks the routing of the Navi 4 cradle cabling as indicated in the accompanying instruction manual. So after trying for quite a while and thinking I am an idiot I rerouted thusly: I took the trim off from around the instrument cluster and routed around the cluster and then down. Works fine and cable length is perfect with no redundant tieoffs necessary under the triple clamp..


You might choose to disassemble the tupperware and find a routing but I like what I have done for ease of install.

Ok on to the cable for the stereo. My purpose was to set up an aux female trs connector so I can plug in my etymotics which are built into earplugs which give my a nice quiet ride and good audio and I just like it, G.
The 2 cable heads left by BMW for audio are next to one another and the power for the GPS is just adjacent all with an inch or two of one another. So I plugged in from the Navi 4 cradle power and audio and it does integrate nicely in the audio stream. Now I have to wire the 4 wire cable referenced earlier in this thread. I noticed the 4 yellow wires are numbered 1-4. And I went to radio shack and got a female trs or aux jack 3.5mm connector. I then taped and labeled the 4 yellow wires 1-4 so I could see the numbers easier and sat down by the front of the bike and with the disassembled trs jack in my hand and manually held all 4 wires in different combos up to the various points in the trs until I found l-r-gnd.

Caveat, the stereo was on with speakers selected and line out on which activates the cable we're working with. In my case I found 1 to be L, 3 to be right, and 4 to be ground. Not that it matters that much since the bike does not have a left to right audio switch onboard anyway. Also, if you look into the trs connector you can see that the tip of the male would be L, and the midpoint would be right, and the major portion of the shaft would be ground. So you would apply that to the female trs (just google male female trs) and figure out how to solder. And make sure your battery is fresh and charged or it will be turning off the stereo for you automatically and making you dip into your reservoir of swear words.

After I had determined the way to connect the wires I pulled the plug out and soldered the wires into the female trs with a radio shack soldering gun and assembled it with some heat shrink and protective sheathing and installed and zip tied off underneath as shown:








Anyway, it's all done and won and I'm happy so I hope this is useful to someone and safe riding all.

I did this and connected the 3.5mm plug to a J & M Integratr. Works like a charm to get the bikes stereo to my helmet. I think it will also give me turn by turn audio from the Nav IV, but I wouldn't know for sure since there is still too much snow around here in Maine!

Yes it does, it lowers volume of the radio or ipod and the directions can be heard clearly.

I have had my Sena paired with the radio since October. All radio functions work except volume control, tone control, and speed dependent volume control. You have to adjust volume through the headset control. All other functions such as tuning, iPod control, muting still work from the radio controls.

Fortunately, in the case of the Sena, volume control is easily controlled with gloves while riding. I hope this answers your question

Autocom makes a adaptor that connects to the speaker outputs and ends with a 3.5mm male end, part #2273 unswitched or #2275 switched (turns external speakers off) it would also allow you to hook up a autocom unit for intercome etc. Kieth Tulsa, OK

that adaptor is for the 1150 and 1200 RT up to 2009, the 2010 and 2011 RTs have another radio!

My purpose for this mod that has been generously offered, (thanks to all), is solely for listening to tunes via earbuds..after the pigtail is made and the buds plugged into the 2.5mm is the music also audible to the outside world or is the fader used here?? I just don't have this clear in my mind..sorry guys
