Broke left mirror glass - how to replace?

Kind folks,

This newbie already broke his bike... took me 4 days! Well... I wanted to route the power cable of my Garmin GPS under left plastice of the handlebar... and then realized I may want to take more plastic off... and then after I got the left air deflector out the left mirror popped off and I tried to catch it but it fell and broke the mirror glass.

Can anyone tell me the procedure in replacing the glass? The rest of the mirror housing is fine.

Thanks (and bummed),

Jon

Cool

Jon, you are not the first, and surely will not be the last to break a mirror glass on this Bike! Here is a thread where you should be able to see the correct way to get the glass out. I simply hit the search function for "Mirror glass replacement":

http://www.bmwlt.com/forums/showthre...ss+replacement

There are at least two methods: Slam it down on a towel or blanket; or get behind the glass and carefully disengage the plastic hooks.

HTH,

John

After you replace the mirror make sure you put tethers on the mirrors..

Unless the mirror is adjusted exactly right you stand the chance of loosing it again.. Not good after you hit a pot hole at speed..

mirror mirror

Thanks so much for the replies and leads.

I was most upset with myself for letting it "pop" off - it just jumped off like it was spring loaded! I slightly pushed in the small spring wires that grab those three bosses which hold the mirror assembly on. It seems to hold much tighter - yet pop off with a fair wack of the heel of the hand.

When I looked at some of the info fouund in the links, it was not clear to me if the replacement mirror glass is ONLY the glass, or glass and plastic backing plate that the glass is stuck to.

I scraped the mirror glass off that flat plastic back and snapped it back into the housing and it's all back on the bike - minus the mirror glass.

I found glass at A&S BMW Motorcycles (in CA and still open when I called from the East coast) and they are shipping one out to me.

Jon

Don't feel to bad Jon. I was on my '03 LT and hit a large pothole Sunday night. The right mirror assy fell off and bounced across a couple of lanes of traffic. I thought I was gonna get lucky until a truck crushed it with his front tire. I didn't know that the mirrors were not secured as the previous owner took off the straps that held the mirrors on. I am trying to locate a used assy before I break down a buy a new one.

Dang! Sorry to hear it. Seeing that (and then paying for a replacement) hurts! I'm still waiting for my mirror glass to arrive. Wonder if a zip-tie would work in securing the mirror asm?

Yes a zip tie will work in fact that is what most of us here use

I'v been using 45lb fishing leaders. When my bike went tumbling a few months ago,the right mirror was destroyed but the mounting plate was still hanging on.
