Okay,
This is a really conspiratorial post.
It is spelled "should".
And it is a "final drive" not a "differential".
The real question (before the moderator moves this post to a less read forum):
Friends and I are planning a ride in early July from Vermont up into Canada, over to the Makinaw Straights, down the Michigan pennisula and back home to southern Vermont via New York or Canada. I am looking for route suggestions in Canada, upstate Michigan, and recommendations to cross NY state from Niagra Falls area back to Vermont. We have plenty of time for the scenic route, detours, and the Good Roads. Looking for the sweepers and twisties and vistas (realizing there is some pretty flat geography on the planned route).
Route suggestions please.
And apologies (not all that sincere) for the subterfuge.
Generally speaking, no. The percentages are still way in your favor. However, if you want to post the year and mileage on your LT, it might give us a better idea of your odds. They changed the final drive during 2002 model year. The new ones seem to have much better longevity. I do know several folks that have picked up a final drive on Ebay and have them sitting in their garage just in case. If you happen to be on the road with a final drive breakdown, someone can ship it you rather than wait for one to be sent to the local dealer at full retail. Just make sure you get the right one but again, the percentages are in your favor that you will not.

Hey Bob, read his post again. Also, Charlie can rebuild his 2000 in the barn with just a pair of pliers, a book of matches and a 2x4 for leverage. The boy is smoothe handy.
This takes the cake for the most bizarre thread ever...but more to the point, I would NOT recommend differentiating on the upper peninsula without an adequate subterfuge, regardless the year of your bike.
You're welcome. Anything you want to know about batteries, oil, or tires before you go?
However, being from Chicago originally and vacationing all over the Great Lakes, I think a ride over the Straits Bridge to see Mackinac Island and a stay at the famous hotel might be a highlight to consider on your route. It is apparent you know how to pronouce it, just wondering when you'll learn how to spell it.
Dayham,
The original post in this thread proved better than I imagined, I had a good laugh reading the posts; just for grins folks... thanks.
And maybe some route suggestions?!?
BTW, recent BMWON "benchwrenching" column, pg 18 has a discussion of final drive failures. I knew just about everything mentioned in the article from past posts on this board but it is worth a read.
I am still riding around with a 17 ball crown wheel bearing and new seal in my side case. I'm telling ya, that's all you gotta do to prevent a final drive melt down.
Seriously speaking. Last year we took a similar trip from Cincinnati OH, north through Meatchicken, crossed the bridge at Mackinaw City, north to Sault Ste Marie, on to Tronto, back to US at Niagra falls, through NY and PA, and back to Cincy. My observations- Rt 23 on the east coast of MI is a nice ride with Cheboygan being a nice little town to stop overnight and/or eat. Crossing the bridge at Mackinac at sunrise is very nice. Highway 17 and 89 in Ontario are rather boring and more crowded than we expected. The falls at Niagra are something to say you have seen and worth a stop if you have never been there. (There is also a casino if interested.) Rt 62 south out of Buffalo was also a nice ride, although this may be out of the way for you.
We experienced no drive failures of any kind, although I might recommend a nice cigar and single malt scotch be carried in case of emergency.
Good luck on your trip!
