Drivers Backrest

I'm shopping around for a drivers backrest. I have a chance at buying a C Bailey's Backup Backrest. What are your thoughts and experience with after market backrest's?

Thanks
Bob...

Best thing for a long ride, think easy chair on wheels. I had the back-up. only sold it because the corbin has on built in. sturdy, soft but firm....like my wife!

Re: Drivers Backrest

If price were no object I'd spring for a Russell seat with their built-in backrest.

I purchased a Utopia backrest; they are very popular with Goldwing riders. It was less expensive than the Bakup but it does require more work to install (it mounts to the passenger seat pan). Pretty comfortable.

Re: Drivers Backrest

Thanks for the replies. I will be trading an after market seat from my Wing for a C Bailey's backrest and cash. My main concern is comfort and adjust ability.

Thanks

Re: Drivers Backrest

I have the Bakup backrest. When I first installed it I wasn't happy but after a couple of rides back to Ojai, Mayers Saddles made some adjustments to my new seat. The seat now angles back slightly which encourages me to rest solidly against the backrest instead of sliding forward away from the backrest. I just got back from a 4500 mile round trip to Madison, Wisconsin and I could not be happier with the added support. I easily rode back to back 1000+ mile days in comfort.

Re: Drivers Backrest

I don't really think backrest are safe for me. I've lowsided and parted from the bike with no obstructions. Made me stop and think. Do I want a backrest pressing on the most vulnerable part of my spine in the case of an accident ? Anyway when I'm solo I have a bag that goes behind me and it's soft material and it kind of presses against my small of the back enough to add a bit of vibration and comfort to that area but would not impead me in a low side get off. In the future I could see where bikes would come with electric adjustable seats and ejectors for impending accidents , kind of vault you over the direct hit of the car. LOL Where do I come up with this stuff.

I considered this when deciding on a back rest. In fact, it kept me from ever buying a Corbin back rest for my Corbin seats. A half inch steel bar behind me with no give seemed like a stupid idea. The support for the Bakup is flexible and I suspect would bend fairly easily in an accident. The biggest issue for me is getting my leg over the rest when I'm in my cold weather riding suit.

Re: Drivers Backrest

just did a 1600 mile "ride in" last month
to Russell Day Long Seats in Shasta Lake, CA.
decided after I got there to add the backrest. off
the page expensive for all of it, but all work
is great. only use the backrest for long trips,
stays in the garage for short ones. it folds
forward for ease in getting on and off.
