Large top case for 2014 R1200RT

The large top case for the older 2005-2013 R1200RTs fits fine on the 2014 R1200RT. A new one costs $832 MSRP compared to $1,600 for the official 2014 large top case, which is heavier. The latter has an electric lock and other amenities. The older top case can be keyed for the same ignition key that operates the 2014 RT. You just don't have an electric lock.

Attached are photos of two large BMW top cases. The blue one on the right is on my 2007 R1200RT and was painted to match its blue color. The Ebony black metallic one on the left is identical, but has been painted to match my 2014 RT and is mounted on it. The ignition key for my 2014 RT opens the top case on it.

You don't need to break the bank to mount a large top case on your new 2014 R1200RT.

Re: Large top case for 2014 R1200RT

Great info, I will do the same. I am running around with my blue top case now, but I am so happy with the bike I don't care!

That is actually a great shot of Ebony black, that is what the color actually looks like under bright sun. It is quite complex with the metal flake.

Jeff, getting a 2014 RT in Ebony tomorrow. Would like to paint the basic topcase to match. How did you get it painted? Is the Ebony paint readily available? Thanks, Mark

Jeff,

I did the same thing you did with the older top case. I picked up my 2014 Ebony R1200RT last Saturday from Ironhorse. Great color match.

Does that mean the BMW replacement lock cylinder repair kit (that fits the 2013) can be used with the 2014 model?

There is no color code available for the ebony paint. The painter has to mix the color to match. My guy did a great job. I have an old top case painted midnight blue if any one is interested. I had it on a 2013 RT.

Another option, if you have a Significant Other who really likes the luxury of the GLT, is to fit the GLT top case on your RT. It has full wrap-around back cushion rather than the basic pad.

My 2014 RT came with this option fitted (it was one that had been turned in due to the recall). Fortunately I didn't have to pay the huge dollars for this option, but my S.O. loves it!

Re: Large top case for 2014 R1200RT

Hello All,

Thank you for sharing how much cheaper the 2013 is over the 2014 and the fact it will fit.
How about lights for the Top Case?
I've seen a light option for the 2014 Top Case but I don't know if they would work with the 2013 Top Case.
I have the 2014 RT (no central locking) and I'm concerned the steel cages won't see my rear lights as well with the big Top Case mounted and hanging over the rear.
The plug and play option is the best. I don't want to start splicing wires, etc. if I don't have to.
I see a pigtail under the passenger seat that I would presume would just plug into the Top Case if properly provisioned with lights.

Thank you for your help.

The existing cylinder in the old top case can be rekeyed to fit your new 14RTW key ! No new cylinder is required.

Can you replace the R1200RT's back rest with one from a K1600GTL case?

Looks like you can get a heated backrest as well, there is an empty plug on the 2014 topcase I got for my RT.

There are reflective film kits that can be applied to the top case. Check eBay.

No, I am afraid that you can't fit the light on the top case that is under discussion here! Personally, I like the look of the newer top case better (the edges are sharper, etc.) and therefore have bought the powered top case to use on my '15 RT. The other attraction to me was also the auxiliary upper brake light that you had mentioned. There is a good dealer here in OH that another member of this forum had discovered, who gives excellent discount on accessories, and you will be able to pick up this powered top case, with the LED option and new lock cylinder kit for $1,375 plus shipping. Oh, it will cost you a little more because you do not have central locking! From what I understand, you will need an extra harness to get power. Give Chris at All Seasons a call at (330)264-7735 and he will give you all the details.

All I know is it fits the 49L topcase that you can buy from BMW at present. If this topcase is exactly the same for previous years and for how many previous years I have no idea. I suggest you touch bases with a BMW parts dept at your dealer and ask when the case style changed. I certainly do not wish to mislead you.

Re: Large top case for 2014 R1200RT

The 2005-2013 49L top case is similar, but different enough that the backrest pad won't fit.

The GTL backrest pad will fit on the 2014 RT 49L top case. It's the same top case as used on the K16GT, except for non-matched paint color. The RT 49L case is also available slightly cheaper without the central locking feature.

The K16GTL top case adds the taller, wider backrest and chrome rear trim. Those pieces are available separately from BMW, but you can't buy a complete GTL top case from them.

The GTL backrest pad will cost you just over $600, for just the pad and mounting hardware. And if you want the chrome trim, add $130, or add $240 with the LED tail light. And that's added to the almost $1,600 cost of the newer top case . . .

If you want a good quality, BMW-made 49L top case that'll fit your stock key, then the previous 2005-2013 case works well, and can be had used at decent prices.

If you want the central locking and the possibility to add the rear LED tail light bar, then the newer 49L top case works, albeit at a pretty high price, and not color matched to the bike.

But if you want all of the above at a decent savings over new, then PM me, as I have a pristine GTL 49L top case that will mount up and plug right into the RT . . .

I fear that if you want a top-drawer top case with arm rests, electric locks, large back bad, chrome, and lights, etc., you may have to screw up your courage, empty your savings account, and buy a 2014 top case. Adding up all the additional bells and whistles Ken listed above with a 2014 top case, it could go home for an MSRP of $2,570!

I am happy with my stock $800 MSRP 2013 top case.

Easily, at standard BMW prices.

Or, you could pick up a used GTL top case for half that cost. They're still pretty rare, but do turn up on occasion.

Mine was pulled off my GTL early on, as I replaced it with a fuel cell and a Pelican case for LD rides. The top case sat safely in my garage until that GTL was scrapped, and my replacement GTL already came with a top case.

I may be wrong but I do not think the arm rests from the GTL will fit the 2014 R1200RT frame for mounting. The arm rests do not attach to the top case of the GTL just to the top of the frame

That is correct.

Some owners have figured out how to add arm rests that do mount to the case itself, although those aren't factory BMW parts.

Re: Large top case for 2014 R1200RT

I had the Skene IQ160 lighting controller for additional rear brake lights on my old bike. Kept it when I sold the bike and installed it to control the 2014 top case brake light on my RT. Now it operates as a running light and can be programmed to flash or not flash when you apply the brakes. I am happy with the increased visibility and OEM look.

Here are wiring instructions.
http://www.lights.skenedesign.com/K1600-IQ-160.shtml

But the red wire has to go here for the RT.

Re: Large top case for 2014 R1200RT

If anyone is not in a hurry, I ordered a brand new top case (pre 2014 style) with lock cylinder for under $600 including shipping on eBay. You tube showed me the way to key the lock cylinder to my motorcycle key and I am good to go.

BMW Topcase R1200 RT Gross Codierbarem Schloss | eBay

It did take 28 days to be delivered to the US from Germany, but if you are patient, this is a pretty good deal. It was cheaper than many of the used cases I found for sale.

It did take 28 days to be delivered to the US from Germany, but if you are patient, this is a pretty good deal. It was cheaper than many of the used cases I found for sale.
Wow, that is a good deal! Could you post a pic installed?

That is the Exact route I was considering going in if my uber cheap (sub $100) used topcase was not going to pan out, turns out it will. I have a re-key kit coming from Hyper and with the ColoRite paint and replacement handle I will be all in for ~ $200. It even came with a chrome luggage rack (thus the ugly plugs) which I will reinstall after the paint. IIRC the above unit came in at $650 to $675 shipped to my zip.

It is the same as what several others have posted. Here are some pics of mine. Sorry for the bad angles. I am getting my house painted and the painters just taped my garage door shut LOL.

I'm going to try and paint my 2014 top box with the ColoRite Quartz Metallic Blue paint. I also bought the ColoRite plastic coat primer and the clear top coat to finish out the project. I'm hoping it will look better than the grey oem paint color!

Before I start my paint work, I'm going to line up and drill the holes for my black, pre-'14 Wunderlich luggage rack.

Or get an RT top box, which is cheaper, AND you can swap out pads!! This was my main goal when I got my '15 RT this weekend, but the guys are the dealership were like...uumm...How about THIS!
Now, I need to find a cheaper than dealer RT top box, and just get the GLT pads for it. Simple 3 bolt swap!

And the pad mounts. Are they swappable with the GLT then? (IE: does it look like the current 2014/15 mounting mounts?) I think it's just 3 bolts? Can you take a picture?

I'd be interested in that used case, if in good condition.

But if you want all of the above at a decent savings over new, then PM me, as I have a pristine GTL 49L top case that will mount up and plug right into the RT . . .
Could you PM the price please?

TIA

Re: Large top case for 2014 R1200RT

Just ordered the fully wired top case for center lock system out of Canada for my 2014 w rt. 1463 Canadian $ which translates to $1,123 US dollars. At that price I added the top case brake light and keyed cylinder. Total with shipping $1448 US dollars. Island BMW out of Victoria. I'm surprised at the price difference.

I can't get a straight answer from anyone about whether the non-lighted case can just be used with the top case brake light by just adding the harness that goes with the central locking option. My dealer's parts guy thinks so, but even BMW rep can't tell him for sure. I guess worst case, I can hard wire it to a switched fuse block and brake light trigger.

Not sure about the non wired top case. I'm sure you can wire it to the brake light.

Yeah, it's just an LED strip, so hardwiring it shouldn't be a problem. Big fan of plug-n-play, though.

I suspect that the answer is a cautious yes! I am sure that the mounting points and the physical aspects will be there, but you will be missing the case's internal wiring harness, which shouldn't be hard to replicate just for the LED! I am also assuming that you are NOT talking about the old-style top-box, which is cheaper and will also fits on the wetheads.

Re: Large top case for 2014 R1200RT

You will have to figure out how to run the wire for the break light through the case which would not have any internal wiring. In addition you will need a quick disconnect for when you need to take the case off. Worst case you could drill a hole through the bottom of the case in order to connect to the bikes rear light wiring.

Yeah, I figured I'll wired a little plug of some type for a disconnect, and probably have to drill a hole and put in a rubber grommet.

I seriously considered the old style box, but I like the streamlined look of hte new one better, and I really want it for the extra brake light.

From where, if you don't mind? I checked a place in Victoria today, and it was going to be $1388 for plain case and auxiliary light.

That's wired case only. Auxiliary brake light and keyed lock got me to 1460.

Ok. That sounds right. The non-lighted case, plus brake light and lockset was quoted at $1388 and free shipping, if ordered from website.

A lot cheaper than US dealers. Just the wired case goes for $1600 in the US.
