New guy question about intercom on a new 2013 R1200RT

Hi everyone,
I am finally going to trade my 04 ST1300 on a 2013 R1200RT
I test rode an RT1200 last year for two days in Palm Springs Cal in the Joshua Tree National Forest and the I'm totally sold.

My only question is that My wife rides with me a lot and coming as well from an 1800Wing with the built in intercom how does the Audio system on the RT interface with An intercom system and which is the best?

Thanks for all the help. I live in Red Deer, Alberta, Canada

The short answer would be that it doesn't. Not well anyway. Unless you go with the BMW system.

Tons of info on this site about different ways to do different things with different brands. I personally use SENA SMH-10's for my wife and me to communicate with each-other. Mine is paired to my phone, hers to her phone allowing us to listen to whatever we want individually (music, books on tape, talk radio, whatever). This method does not involve anything on the motorcycle, which can be taken as good - or bad, depending on whom you ask.

FWIW, I have the wired Autocom Super Pro-AVI which is an older unit I transferred from my R1200R. It interfaces easily to about anything you might want to attach, and has none of the issues a Bluetooth system may encounter. Plugging in the headset and earplug speakers makes for a nice quiet ride and you can actually hear the audio clearly.

Re: New guy question about intercom on a new 2013 R1200RT

I agree wit Doug. I bought my Rt without the radio and used a J&M integratr 4 intercom with FM radio in the glovebox wired to the bike. I run my Zumo 660 which has MP3 and GPS audio and connects bluetooth to my cell phone through the Integratr 4. I would rather deal with a headset cord and have reliable sound than have to charge batteries on the bluetooth setups.

I rode a Gold Wing for 6 years with my wife and did not have an intercom !
I considered it a blessing !

For the original OP

That answer is not accurate. In fact the Sena SMH-10 will interface with the BMW Audio system. The only thing that won't work is the volume control. Intercom is via bluetooth units on each helmet. Most set up phone to GPS and GPS by bluetooth. Some put a bluetooth dongle on the audio system speakers.
There is copious posts about how this is all done. Searcg for R1200RT as a poster. He has a pairing system that works.
best regards
paul

I'll stand by what I said - 'The short answer would be that it doesn't. Not well anyway.'

If you think it's 'working well' when the volume control doesn't work, then you and I have different definitions of the phrase.

I also believe Chris does not have a particular intercom, but is in fact looking for suggestions on what 'is best'. Again, I think one of the major functions (the volume) not working is not something 'working well', let alone what 'is best'.

each to their own.
The volume works well via the Sena... therefore the system is fully functional...call what you like.. it works

Re: New guy question about intercom on a new 2013 R1200RT

I have the Sena system mounted on mine and my wifes helmet for when we are travelling together.
We have them paired to each other and to our iphones, so we can chat when we want to, or else just listen to music.
I find it to be a very good system.

Yup, that's what I/we do. Works great. By bypassing the BMW interface entirely.
