Anyone know why the boxer has two spark plugs? I replaced my standard plugs with iridium plugs and bought four of course but why two per cylinder?

The older you get, the more you know and the less you need.

Re: 2008 1200 rt sparkplugs

I installed a set of these from Beemerboneyard.com:
Set of 4 new Bosch YR5LDE Spark Plugs For All New R1200GS /ST /RT /S /R Bikes Through 2009
They are the oem Bosch YR5LDE plugs.
If you tackle this yourself, be careful pulling the coils. If you are not familiar with that, it is best to purchase the coil removal tool.

Without going into a lot of detail I believe they added the second plug to resolve a low speed hesitation issue.

and... a suggestion... edit your profile to show where you are located. There will be someone nearby who can help you with the BMW mysteries.

These extra plugs were fitted to reduce / eliminate surging which was so common on most of the 1100/early 1150 series.
They also improve engine flexibility and allegedly improve fuel consumption.
Part of it wast to reduce exhaust emissions for the ever more stringent marketplace standards.

Yep! You have the first-hand experience, but that is pretty much what I had read. The root cause of that issue was that the shape of the combustion chamber contributes to incomplete combustion with a single plug (not unusual at all), and so BMW had solved the issue by adding a second plug. The wethead have only one plug because BMW had redesigned the combustion chamber to yield more efficient combustion. BTW, you may have read in another thread that the design of combustion chamber will effect "pre-ignition" or detonation, and I will tell you that is a bunch of rubbish! And, this is from a first-hand experience with messing with such in the very distance past!!
