Tire Recommendation?

I just picked up a 2011 R1200RT yesterday! Has 14k miles.

Tires are totally out of shape, squared off front and rear.

I live in Seattle although I don't ride in the rain much. Normally just commuting on the freeway and some day trips when the weather is nice. I do have a tendency to ride a bit "spirited" from time to time.

Any recommendation on tires?

Tire Recommendation?

Everyone has their own opinion on tires, so you'll get many responses. That said, I like Pirelli Angel GTs.

Re: Tire Recommendation?

Metzeler Roadtec 01 gets accolades and will be my next tire for a '16 RT. I've had some less than great lean performance on the Michelin PR4GT hence looking for something different. Pirelli Angel GT is my 2nd choice--this from reading various posts and listening to our local shop staff.

There are a lot of new tires out there. I have owned a few RT's and like Metzler Z8's on them. The new O1 is getting press now. The Michelin PR4's are very popular but for me they squirm in the corners a little and wear poorly at the end. They are the go to wet tire for the NW it seems.

Next part. If you order the tires on the web at discount houses, (Rocky Mountain ATV, Jake Wilson, American Motorcycle Store or others, you will save many dollars and have a good choice. I install those tires for $40, remove wheels from your bike, mount and balance the tires and re install. Also look over your bike. I use a Coats power tire machine. I live in Mount Vernon, just north of you an hour. <snipesb (at) cnw.com> many of the folks I change tires for order them and have them shipped to me so they just have to ride up. Takes about 2 hours to change them on the long end of the scale. Generally less.

Re: Tire Recommendation?

I had a set of Michelin's PR4 GT tires put on right before a trip last Sept. During the trip hit an object in road and took out the rear tire and a Metzeler RoadTec 01 was all the dealer had available and I was just passing through so had it put on. Only thing I have noticed is its a good bit noisier than the previous tire, a noticeable howl particularly when not totally upright (corners).

I wonder how common that is. The PR4GT's have started to howl over the last 1000 miles or so in turns, w/ 7000 miles on them so far. I did not get this from my prior set until over 10K miles. I'm guessing batch to batch variation happen w/ tires due to subtle differences in materials and construction.

Re: Tire Recommendation?

Have had Conti Road Attack II, did not last well. PR4GT, also not pleased with mileage and cupping, just put on Pirelli Angel GTs a week ago, will see how these go. I mentioned in another thread, if my memory serves me correctly they do have a $40 rebate going on right now for a number of different Pirelli tires.

Haven't heard one bad thing about the Angel GT so you should be in good shape.

Re: Tire Recommendation?

Roadtec 01 HWM's on mine. 20% better life than the Z8 and is a better tire than the Z8. Only downside as noted is that they are much noisier than the Z8 but only really notice it on the asphalt and leaned over.

Re: Tire Recommendation?

I've had Metzeler Roadtec Z6 and replaced them at 12,000 km and switched to Michelin PR3 with 14,000 km and the Michelins still look great. Both tires offer terrific adhesion for dry and wet conditions, but so far the Michelins are lasting for mileage.

Re: Tire Recommendation?

First Question - What kind of mileage do you guys get from your tires. I have the original PR4 GTs on my 2014 RT with just a touch over 9k miles and they only have 1mm left to the run bar. Is this normal?

Second Question - What is the widest tire you can put on the rear end of a 2014 RT?

Thanks,
Keith.

Re: Tire Recommendation?

I talked myself into Angel GT A spec and just got back from 1200 miles on them and they're fine. If they cup less than PR4GT I'll be happy with them. They're quiet, grip well. The local shop said Roadtec 01's will be noisier but just initially then get quieter over a short period of riding, like a 100 miles or so, at least that was their take.

Why does that happen after you put on new tires?!

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by 'took out?' Routine puncture? My daughter was driving her Honda Accord thru Kettleman City CA after dark and something on the road really did 'take out' TWO of her tires--sliced them badly. She didn't get hurt but super spooky she was on the side of an I-5 in the dark at age 19y w/ two flat tires. She called me, I called the CHP and they helped her find a dude that owns a tire shop and he ultra graciously at 10pm found two tires and they were bloody low-profile tires in that very rural area, and installed them for her.

Re: Tire Recommendation?

avons all the way, had them on the LT when they were just storms, now the storm 2 and now the storm 3D. And just put them on the RT, and again, the best I used.
ran most tires on different bikes, dunlop(eww), michelin, bridgstone, avon, metz, always seem to come back to avon.
best for my riding style, rain (wow), cornering.
IMHO.
Keep the rubber side down.

I ordered a set of Metzeler Roadtec 01s yesterday. My '14 RTW has less than 18k miles, and I have worn out three sets of Michelin PR4s. I will never buy another Michelin tire!

I have run many sets of Avon 3D-XM rear and pilot road 2 front. On the RT I got 9500 miles from the rear and changed them as sets....the front would have done more. I never had good luck with the Avon front ( shake on deceleration @ app 45 mph after about 3500 miles )
