Re: Va. to Nova Scotia

From Va there aren't too many options. Here's wha I'd do.

Motor up tp NB, take the ferry to Digby, ride around NS om my way up to the Cabot Trail, then head off to visit Louisbourg(must see).

Enjoy!!

Re: Va. to Nova Scotia

Are you going to try to take any ferries? Some of them have stopped running. If you are riding all the way up you won't have a lot of time. It is a fairly long way up there. Probably about 3+ days up there if you are in a group or two up. I'm guessing probably 700 miles from tip of Maine to southern tip of NS..

Re: Va. to Nova Scotia

I'd like to get there the quickest way possible, Ferry's are an option. the route. I've been playing with from home to Halifax has it at 1337 miles. I don't know how accurate mapsource is, just started using it. this route is all road. so should be able to cut some miles off by using the ferry's.

Re: Va. to Nova Scotia

The ferry service out of Portland is no longer running. There was an attempt to get it back this year but no money in the budget. There is one ferry running from Saint John NB to Digby NS.

Do the Cabot Trail Counter Clockwise and avoid all the RV's
Check out the "CAT" from Yarmoth to Portland. Great Catamaran Ferry.
Dont miss Peggy's cove, Halifax Bike Night on the harbor and most of all
Truro to see the Tidal Bore. Check out You Tube for video on Tidal Bore.
The bridge to Prince Edward Island is about $48.

Re: Va. to Nova Scotia

Can't help much with NS although I drove completely across it last fall on the way to Newfoundland, was just going through there as fast as I could. But a couple areas in southern Maine I found interesting and made a return trip with the bike a couple weeks ago. Don't know if you're a sportsman or outdoorsman but just into Me from NH on 95 exit #3 is Kittery Trading Post, a HUGE outdoor supply store comparable to Cabela's. Off the same exit or back on exit 2 is Warren's Lobster House, not a foodee but quite possibly it may have been the best meal I've ever bought, everything was just delicious, my girlfriend and I split (2) 1 lb whole lobsters and 2 tails. We're riding back again in July. It's also very close to MAX BMW in Portsmouth NH which was one of the reasons for going there a couple weeks ago, to test ride a GTL.

Farther up the road in Freeport is the original LL Bean, it isn't a store, it is a major complex with several large buildings. The Bean complex and the whole town is just a very interesting place to walk around, excellent blueberry ice cream and nice blueberry wine. A lot of the town is outlets built into the original updated and upscale New England homes. I liked the technical clothing stores like Patagonia and North Face. As a backpacker I find the same technical clothes that work well in hot or cold or wet weather for backpacking also work very well for the same things on the bike. So I get dual use for the same bucks.
