Is there a way to reset the computer to factory settings?

Hi folks,

I have an 06 K1200LT. I'm curious if there's a way to reset the computer(s) to the factory settings without any special tools. What are the ramifications to doing this (if possible)?

Thanks!

Yes. Turn the key on, do not start. Twist the throttle three times to wide open. I believe that works on all model years.

That resets the throttle position. Is that what we are talking about?

Disconnect the battery over night. But that only clears the memory in the ECS. Just what have you changed that you want to reverse?

Re: Is there a way to reset the computer to factory settings?

After installing the Road Rocketeer LED brake lights (without the resistor) my ABS light came on solid and the ABS is not working. The guys from Road Rocketeer sent me the resistor (which is now installed) however the ABS light is still on. The fellow I spoke to from Road Rocketeer said that installing the resistor would restore the system back to normal. Which it hasn't. I can hear the servo when either brake is applied. The light came on immediately after the LED lights where installed.

Prior to the resistor being installed the bike had its 24K service and the dealer said it was definitely the brake lights causing the problem. I wonder if the dealer disabled the ABS while it was hooked up to their computer, so even after the resister was installed the ABS would stay disabled. That wouldn't completely surprise me, with business being as slow as it is.

This is why I'm trying to get the ECU reset to factory standard. I realize that the odometer should not be effected, and that's fine.

Re: Is there a way to reset the computer to factory settings?

Seems to me you just need someone close with a GS911 to read your codes and clear them.

If you look at the GS911 posts you can see who may be close to you, and who may run up and reset the codes for you.

Re: Is there a way to reset the computer to factory settings?

I see you have an Integral ABS (2001 up) the center lamp in the tail light is the one that is monitored for failure. This was not designed this way for the LT but rather a hold over from the single bulb tail light of the RS model. They use the same unit. It pupose was to detect a burned out tail light and illuminate the brake light element at a reduce level and alert the rider.

Put a plain bulb back in the tail light center location and if the fault self clears then that is the issue. Recheck how you installed the resistor, it should go between the low wattage element and ground to simulate a regular bulb current load. If the fault does not self clear then you have a different issue than the LED lights and should get a read out from the dealer or some one with a GS-911.

Unhappy Re: Is there a way to reset the computer to factory settings?

Well, we're back to my original problem. Is there a way to reset the computer to the factory settings? If not, is there a registry out there for people who have the GS911?

Check the gs-911 registry in the bike talk forum. Its a sticky message at the top.

Question Re: Is there a way to reset the computer to factory settings?

Thanks! Waiting on a response to someone in my area.

In the meanwhile, is the only way to reset the ABS via a plug in device (GS911, Dealer Diagnostic Tools) ??

Re: Is there a way to reset the computer to factory settings?

You can only clear out STORED fault codes with the GS-911 or dealers Moditec. The Integral ABS will stop giving you a warning when you have fixed the fault. i.e. if you have fixed what was causing the warning lights they will go out automatically. If you still have flashing lights you have not fixed the fault. Only the early bikes with ABS II did the warnings stay on after the fault was fixed and required a reset.

Re: Is there a way to reset the computer to factory settings?

Is it possible that the dealer disabled the ABS, leaving the light on? If that is possible, will the GS911 allow me to re-enable the ABS? I'm shooting in the dark here, I have no experience with the bike in this respect.

Re: Is there a way to reset the computer to factory settings?

I don't think there is a way to disable the ABS, at least on the LT. Lets go back to the begining. You put in LED lights in the tail light right? Then you had the warning. You added a resistor per the LED provider and that did not stop the warning. Did you ever go back and put a conventional bulb back in the center position? That should have made the warning go away. This assumes you have a steady "general warning light" and no flashing lights. The center rear bulb is the only thing that will cause that fault.

Re: Is there a way to reset the computer to factory settings?

I'll reinstall the original tail light in the center tomorrow, and let you know what the results are. I'd hate to go back to the original rear lights, the LEDs are a significant improvement over stock.

Re: Is there a way to reset the computer to factory settings?

You only have to replace one bulb out of the three so all you are losing is the center tail light position.

If this does fix it then put the LED back in and add the resistor (you got from the supplier) hooking one end to the Green/Black wire and the other end to the Brown wire at the center bulb socket.
